For us Yanks...what the heck is "tare" weight? Perhaps curb weight or loaded weight?

not sure how i should answer that, i'm old enough to remember blokes who ran perth from sydney in semi's, stopping in south australia to buy a wooden crate of the old formula coke and a block of ice for the trip over the nulabour ( roads still unsealed), but not old enough to have actually done it.
i'm old enough to be able to say we went to the drive in every week, and i can remember 20 cents buying enough hot chips to feed a family of six and not be able to finish them( a cup of chip here is $2.50 min now )
i danced to rock and roll, but i was still in the cot
gross, tare and net r still used down here, after many years running interstate, old habbits die hard.
