Brake Upgrade questions - 1953 - 56 to 1966 brakes
Can someone clarify this for me.
You would add 1966 front brakes to your 53 to 56 ford backing plates because the 1966 brakes are self adjusting? Is that right?
Do the 1964 and 1965 models have that feature?
Would you use the earlier brake drums or the 1966 drums?
On the 53 to 56 F100s are the drums and hubs separate or cast as one?
Any tech pages that get into this swap?
So many questions. Enquiring minds want to know.........

Oh Yeah!!!
I upgraded my 55 brakes last summer after noticing that the same shoe sizes were listed for the years up to about 1967 or so (sorry, I don't remember exactly what year). I was redoing my brakes completely (everything is new except the metal brake lines, and a master master cylinder that got a rebuild kit), and added the automatic brake adjusting kits. I had never rebuilt with auto-brake adjusting, so I found an internet site that showed rebuilding them: http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/ar_replica_car_kits/article/0,2021,DIY_13707_2823779,00.html
In hindsight, I was really really really dumb, because I had so many questions that could have been answered - BY LOOKING AT MY 1978 FORD PICKUP THAT WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY!!!!!!!!!! Talk about hindsight being 20/20 LOL
I bought my brake hardware kits from Napa auto parts, & will dig up the part numbers & post them when I get home.
I ran into one clearance problem, there is a square sheet metal "box" around the axles on the rear & the spindles on the front (I assume that it is a grease shield, that isn't present on my 78 pick up), that prevented installation of the auto adjusters. My plan is to remove them in the future when I renew bearings/king pin. However, in the mean time, & with apologies to all who cringe when they read this: I plastically deformed them into an irregular shape to allow adequate clearance (beat the heck out of the corner that was causing my problem). If I remember right, I had to deform the corners inward about 3/8" or so, more in the front & a little less in the rear.
I have put about 1,000 miles on the truck since the rebuild & am very happy with their performance to date.
Regards,
Jon

The answer depends a lot on what your plans are for the truck, they are all Bendix brake units. As I recall Ford quit using the Lockheed style after the 47 model year. Seems to me the reason they go to the later years are if the rearend housing is changed. You would normally use the brake setup the housing came with. If you went to IFS in the front, then you would probably use a later brakes with the 4 1/2" bolt circle. As already stated the drum availability and cost could be a factor. A person could shop for a budget priced drum and install the other components from that year to make it work. They are sold in different width and diameter. Like you said, a person could want the self adjusters, I personally don't see why. In my past they were always more trouble than they are worth. I takes me all of 10 minutes to adjust my manual rear brakes. I installed disc brakes on the front of my 51. Why not just upgrade to front Disc brakes, you won't be sorry. Look at www.bonusbuilt.com brake upgrades. Any look at the center section of the home page that says how to flip an F1 and walk away from it. He was probably using the stock fromt brakes on that truck.
I had a little trouble understanding your question, so I hope this information is helpful.
1. I believe they went to the self adjusters in 64
2. Yes 64 and 65 had self adjusters
3. Not sure, a lot would depend on the spindle, weather or nt the later drum could be swaged onto the early hub.
4. They should be 2 piece. some vendors could have made them as one piece.
5. Check with Barry on tech pages he is our answer man in that area.

Hi Madathlon,
Yes indeed, that's what I found so cool!! Ford used the same brake parts from around 1947 to 1967 or so. I noticed this when I was working with the counter guy looking up parts for my '55. That's when I decided to install the auto-adjusters. Here's a link to raybestos, which has the brake parts listed for your year truck. They're the same ones as my 55.
http://www.raybestos.com/catalog type in your year model, ford truck, f100, click brakes & hit the go button. You can then compare the part numbers to the Raybestos numbers that I listed for my ride.
Regards,
Jon
