Any help in improving gas mileage on a 2001 Explorer Sport from 14 mpg (ouch) would be very apreciated. I've heard of aftermarket computer chips or programers but do not know if this the solution. Any thoughts or suggestions?

tr63031 we need info, how many miles are on it? have you done any spark plug changes, wire, pcv, fuel filter, air filter, oil changes, trains services?? all of this will make your mileage go in to the crapper.
Explorer has 61,000 miles approx. and we bought it used from a dealer. It had one original owner and we ran a carfax on it. Nothing came up as far as service work done but I did have an oil change and flushed system to remove any sludge build-up. So it sounds like I should try a tune-up and replacing fuel filter. Does anyone have any experience with aftermarket computer programmers to change any factory settings to improve performance and mileage?
Most of the aftermarket stuff (programmers) force high octane pump gas on you. That quickly negates any mpg gains which would have taken long enough to recoup that programmer cost anyway...
Sounds like you need a really good tune up first. then when the truck is running right then do the performance. I have a SCT chip from motorhaven and it give me 3 settings to go to.
