Well, I'm really hope'n Ford's money DID help. The Land Rover, IMO, is Junk.
My buddy owned a later model Discovery (I believe a '99). The thing was self-distructing from the moment he brought it home. I told him to get his money back (lemon law) but he refused as he was big on status symbols and a true-blue yuppie for sure. Within three years just about every piece of side body molding had fallen off. Windows leaked, etc. I took a look under the car one day just to see how beefy the thing was put together....I thought I was lookin' at a chassis on a mini pick-up!
We did some research on the web a couple years back and found out that according to JD Power, Land Rover had the SECOND WORST vehicle depedability record of ALL the manufacturers (second only to KIA).
Check them out. I still think they're nothing more than a $6 dollar pair of shoes with a $12 dollar shoe-shine job. My opinion.....
I know LandRover have previously had severe quality issues, and I mean SEVERE...
However since LandRover have been purchased by Ford, they have implemented many quality improvements.
I will reserve my judgement until they have been ont he road for a couple of years, but I am quietly optimistic...
As for Cadillac putting a blower on the Escalade, I know the public will love it, but I despise that vehicle with a passion...
The problem with Land Rover over here, I think, is the trucks have never really been taken seriously other than in toney neighborhoods where they make a statement. "I'm a high-income idiot, so I bought a high-priced trouble-prone 4X4." In fairness, though, Land Rover doesn't have the worst CSI scores around- Hummer somehow managed that feat (another story for another day). If Ford can pull a Jaguar with the company, and get the quality to a reasonable level, it might work.

Did you read my post about my daughters shot at a kid in Science class she was arguing with? "You're so stuck up, I bet your mom drives an Escalade!" bwaahaahaa! (It's black, with 22" wheels) that's my girl.
I like what they did with Jag, as far as looks, but the new Rovers are butt ugly. There is no obvious lineage, it's just another suv to me. If i'm going to get one, I'll get about a 90 Range Rover, yank the 3.9l and drop a real v8 into it, lift it and wheel it.
I know they aren't the prettiest of vehicles, but I happen to kind of like the looks, they show a mix of heritage, while still looking modern.
One thing you can't deny them, is that if you see one, you are certainly not going to mistake it for another vehicle.
Another thing I like is thier serious off road ability.
In this day and age where every company is producing cross over vehicles, diluting thier vehicles original ability.
Land Rover still make vehicles that will destroy most things this side of a Wrangler or a H1 off-road.
We haven't gotten the Defender for a few years. Odd, because you couldn't get one for love or money when they were offered. Land Rover seems to think that Americans strictly want mom taxis, so the real stuff stays...somewhere else.
hmmm....
Could be due to your emissions (they are only available as a Diesel)
You may get the next Defender (due for 2008), as this one hasn't changed for about the last 25 years, except a few engine upgrades to make it meet emissions...
