I've been considering a new pickup. I notice that the heavy payload package is only available on the supercab, and not the supercrew (supercrew is my preference, but I could live with a supercab). I do a fair amount of towing with a 5500 lb. RV trailer (loaded weight), and have considered the benefits of the 4.10 axle. Does anyone have experience with the heavy payload package? Does it make any noticeable difference while towing? In any case, the 3.73 should do better than the 3.55 in my current 2001 F150. Of course, what I'd really like is a new 5 speed auto with a 'Hurricane' engine in the Supercrew, but don't know if that's going to happen in the next year or not.
I had considered the possibility of a Super Duty, but after test driving one, I just like the size and driveability of the F150 much better. My current pickup does well with the trailer, so I'm inclined to stick with the F150.
Many people here will tell you that their truck tows wonderfully. I have a HD SCAB and have towed 6000# trailers a couple of times. During one of those trips I had to stop quickly, ie truck tires almost locked up and everything was smooth and straight. The extra length of the truck really helps. As for the 4.10s, on a recent trip I managed to get 12.2 mpg at a speed of 60 mph. You barely notice the extra weight on the highway.
I'm pulling a 7500 lb (loaded) travel trailer with a 04 SCREW with the towing package and 7200 LB GVWR package. You'll be fine. Make sure you have a good brake controller (Tekonisha Prodigy is my recommendation), good anti-sway and weight distributing hitch (Equalizer is my recommendation). I, too, love the SuperCrew cab. I'm right at my GVWR and about 1500 LBS shy of my GCVWR. My only negative about my rig is I'm a little long (33ft) for my wheelbase. Stopping shouldn't be an issue as any travel trailer the size you're talking about has it's own brakes. I stop much faster with my travel trailer hooked up than I do without. (7000 lbs behind you really helps slow you down)
I figured the standard Supercrew would tow fine, as it has a higher towing capacity than my 2001 does (9200 vs. 7800, I believe). I was just curious about the 4.10 axle and the other beefier stuff, if it was a noticeable difference, or fairly subtle for the weight I'm towing.
I believe my current 3.55 axle is too low. If the engine were turning a couple hundred RPM more it would be more into meat of the torque curve and handle head winds and what not better. But, the 2005 Supercrew is available with the 3.73 and more torque/hp to boot, so I think I should do fine. I also did some more research and found that the HD package is only available with the 8 foot bed, which makes it a tight fit for my garage. So, the Supercrew looks like the best fit for me.
You're right on the HD package. My 3.73s are doing just fine and the gas milage is... well... less than terrible. Even if the 4.10 was available on the F-150, I'm not sure I'd want to go up to it. It's only going to give you a slight towing improvement and since I do about 5% of milage towing, I'd rather not sacrifice the gas.
Make sure you get the towing package (Hitch, electrical, tranny cooler) and the 7200 LB GCVW package) If you get them both that truck will pull your load fine. Mind you, it's no 6.0L F-250 PSD, but it will do fine. See you on the road...
I Have A 2005 Scab Long Bed Hd. Xlt And Just Got Back From A Spring Break Trip To Fla.(1100 Mi. Ea. Way). From Indy, pulling A 4500lbs Travel Trailer, The Truck Did Great. 14 Mpg Avg For The Trip. The Hd Has A Heavy Duty Tranny. And Rarely Jumped Out Of Over Drive Going Thru The Smokey Mts At 70 Mph. Make Sure You Get The Power Sliding Back Window And Rev Back Up Sensors. This Is A Great Truck And I Love It, But The Ride Is Much Stiffer Than My 99 Scab Lb.
