If the insides of the catalytic converter were knocked out, or if the converter was completely removed, what would this do to the back-pressure on the motor??
Would this mess-up the computer in the way the engine runs??
Ironic how things happen sometimes. I was at the mechanic's today getting my yearly inspection done. I asked him about this catalytic question, and this is what he said.
If you knock out the insides of it, or take it off completely, it will turn on the "check engine" light and show a code. He says that if the light is on, on the dash, then he is required to check the codes, and it would register on the computer as not being right.
He has never lied to me before, so I trust his word on this.
Yup, taking off the cats (did you notice there are 4 of them? 2 prewarmers, 2 cats) will set off a check engine light. The O2 sensor reading will be off, but you can add a MIL sensor to trick the computer to thinking the cat is still working.
