I was looking at another thread on the '04 F150 area and I was wondering if this general setup would work in an '03 SCrew too.
I basically wouldn't use DVD "a lot" in my truck, but I'd like to have it in dash if possible. Mostly because those are built better for skipping, and I wouldn't mind upgrading the audio. I plan on just putting better speakers in, but no sub or amp. I don't want to take up the space.
I have a 7" LCD TV for my son in his room. That runs both AC/DC. I'd buy an Ebay bracket to put it on the passenger headrest for the back. But if I bought a lower end DVD unit with no display, it would be a PITA to do anything on the DVD from upfront.
So anyway, I was wondering if a setup like this will work on an '03. A receiver sepearte from an in dash DVD. This way I could keep costs down. Maybe just get a receiver and try it out. If it doesn't work well, then add a display up front from an Ebay sale. So the big question is, does the '03 have the same size slots up front as the '04's??
One thing to remember is that the dash of the 04/05 are angled back and are flat from top to bottom. The 03 and older are vertical and have an overhang at the top from the dash. When you get a kit to mount an aftermarket system, make sure it has the face of the deck out about 3/4 of an inch. Otherwise, depending on the screen you buy, it will hit the overhang at the top and will wind up facing down a bit also not allowing you to angle it towards you for viewing. I bought a new Alpine indash DVD player with the motorized screen and had to return it. It mounted flat with the trim and the shop didnt have the kit I was needing. So now I am hunting for the kit before I buy again. It doesn't look bad or anything, just that the trim kit is curved so that the face of the deck is further out from the dash.
the main thing that is different is the mounting of the radios. the kits for the 97-03 snap in. the 04 & up bolt in. the best video systems for these trucks is a kenwood double din with dvd/cd/am/fm and you can add tv or navigation if you want. some other companys make a system like this one but i feel the kenwood is the best based on money, looks and installation. just be aware that is illegal to have any video other than navigation in the front of a car or truck. in some states it is illegal to have video in the car at all. so i would check you local laws before you us one.
I really like the Kenwood, but for what I'm going to use it for, it's too pricey. I figured I'd be using the DVD part only three or four times a year. Outside of that, it's pretty much all just CD/radio.
In my state, the only law that would apply would be a citation for "care required". That can be applied in any situation whether DVD, cell, or eating.
But if the "cheaper" route isn't all that easy, I just might have to keep an eye out for the Kenwood on Ebay. Cheap, right, easy. Pick any two.
Thanks for the info on the kit. I hadn't really thought of that. That might make the "cheap" way more of a pain than it's worth. That would mean I'd have to get the "right" display. Getting the wrong one could be more hassle than it's worth.
i would check into a portible dvd with screen and a battery power fm mod. wal-mart has the fm mods for about 20 bucks. make or buy a bracket to hold the screen. set the fm mod to 88.3 or there abouts and injoy. that will be the cheapest way. best of all it will work in car or truck with a fm radio.
I had bought a portable DVD player two years ago and it sucked. Didn't handle the vibrations, and there aren't many in a Grand Marquis, trust me. We used it like three times in the car. Then just after warranty goes out, it starts overheating and only working for three minutes at a shot. Garbage!
Plus, I hate all the wires and crap. It is cheap, but a pain with all the extra power. I'm thinking now if I can sell my old '89 F150, I'll use that money and just buy a Kenwood and have a wire run under the carpet for a secondar monitor out back.
Do alot of research, Crutchfield, kenwood, panasonic, alpine...etc. There are alot of "Exact fit" items and other addons so that you can create just about any setup. The only limit is the $$ you are willing to spend.
i have a portable too. mine works fine. if you buy a real cheap one then you will have more problems. i got mine about 6 years ago and payed 600 dollars. you can get a good one like mine for about 300 with a bigger screen than i have. if you buy one that is around 100 to 200 then you will more than likely have problems.
I just went to Crutchfield checking on the Kenwood 7015. They claim it doesn't fit a 2003 Supercrew. Anyone actually know for sure this will fit? Is Crutchfield wrong?
I'm thinking of stopping my a local audio store that sells Kenwood and see what they have to say.
The onlu thing I can think of that would cause an issue is that some of the factory units are angled down at the top back of the chassis to clear some of the vent tubing inside the dash. Is your original unit completely square at the top back of the chassis?
