Ford Tuff

Ford tuff is right!

Bought one of daughters an '05 Escape in December...This A.M. she was re-ended by an '03 Tahoe...Scratches on rear bumper and maybe a slight shift in bumper location. The Tahoe front end is wasted!

BTW at first blush she is OK but, she is 6 months pregnant so going to the baby doctor just to make sure that my grandson is OK, too.

I hope everything is alright after your daughters accident.

I was wondering which bumper cover you have on your '05? My '05 Hybrid has the painted (silver) bumper cover and I am curious about the durability of it.

My '04 has the grey plastic cover. I like that look better than the painted one and it seems like it would be more receptive to a minor collision.

Thanks.

Ray

Non painted bumper. Barely scratched but the plastic mounting brackets are toast.

Since no paint involved about $ 500.00, total, to replace. Looks like no steel bracket damage.

Apparently, the Tahoe front end plowed when the gal hit the breaks and went under the Escape bumper. Tahoe has MAJOR damage.

Anyone just walking around the Escape would never have known it was hit.

Very impressed with this little truck.

FYI: My daughter and baby are doing fine. Thanks for your concern.

I think the rear ends of Vehicals were generaly built a little "tougher" than the front ends. Few years back my mother was in a Jetta, and was rear ended hard by a Jeep Cherokee...waisted the cherokee and just managed to mess up the jettas bumper and trunk lid. Personaly though I think i'd rather the rear end absorb more impact by crunching a bit more so that my own body didn't have to take so much. I'd rather have a totaled vehical than one that is damaged for as long as I own it... btw, the Jetta went from 50mpg down to 40 after the wreck.

I've heard of a few people getting hit really hard from behind in the Escape and they've held up well. Major cost if you really crumple the floorboard back storage area though.

At the end of January, I hit a donkey at about 40mph in my 02 Escape. I was dodging a herd of animals (horses, donkeys, cows and a llama) running across a rural road in the dark (long story). I hit him square after dodging a horse and the donkey's back was slightly higher than the hood. EVERYTHING was trashed in front of the engine along with the hood and fenders. Not a jolting impact so the airbags didn't deploy. The estimate was $7k in damage which included 6 hours of unibody frame alignment so I sold as salvage and got the totaled value. I'd agree the back seems a little sturdier. But don't stick one of those aftermarket third row seats in the back of an Escape.

What kind of damage did the donkey sustain?

I saw an accident scene today that really gave me faith in newer vehicles in two ways...

A late model SD (350 I think) rear-ended a stopped newer Chevy Impala (or similar looking GM car). The trunk of the car was crumpled all the way to the back doors. From the back door forward there wasn't a mark on it. There was glass and tail-lights everwhere. The Superduty looked unscathed - it may have had a plow mount on it.

What amazed and impressed me is that the two drivers were both unhurt, standing beside the vehicles exchanging papers....

Oh, he's dead. There was a guy in front of me in a Chevy S10 who took out a donkey and a small cow at the same time. The animals were spooked by an earlier car and running full speed in the dark/rain directly across a two lane road. He clipped the cow which sent it's legs into his passenger side window. We both walked away but left 3 dead animals. I was able to drive my Escape back to the house (2 miles) with a busted radiator since it was cold. The engine/tranny were fine but the cost of all those various body parts, radiator, fans, brackets, lights, inner fender well, etc add up real fast.

I was in an accident back in 85 driving a 84 Nissan pickup. About the same speed but I rear-ended a guy pulling in front of me. Much harder impact. No crumple zone and engines didn't drop back then. It twisted the drivetrain and my 5-speed stickshift pinned my leg. Similar looking front-end damage but the engine pushed to the firewall. The other guys pickup (Ford Ranger) had it's back bumper pushed to the axle. Both were totaled.
