ok, for all of you who are wondering i have drivin both 2003 tahoes and expys. my job lets me drive around almost all new model cars both domestic and some imports
the tahoe - 350 2wd, 4wd high and low
engine has nice power, but takes a sec to kick in
the interior is nicely done, i think the cd player is kinda cheesy. 6 disc tho i dont like the sound. no sunroofs i've seen. the dash is a carbon copy of the avalanche. the steering in my opinion is too small. power locks, windows, mirrors
its decent. i dunno if id buy one tho.
the expy - 351 she can move. no 2wd option, auto 4 or 4 high and 4 low
leather interior, keypads, 6 disc changer, really nice sound, sounds like it has subs and everything. roomy interior, power seats/mirrors/windows/sunroof. tilt cruise ect. the steering is just the right size, lets you get a good grip, dash is clear and simple just like the explorer.
over all i think expy takes the cake over the tahoe.
For my money, I'd take the Tahoe over the Expy for one reason, solid live axle rear suspension.
The Tahoe and Suburban both use solid rear axles(at least last I was aware of anyway) but this may have changed.
I don't like the Expy's IRS system, I've seen a few pulling T trailers and they bow alot.
But if I were to buy any SUV at all (which I will not-at least not for myself) It would be the Excursion with v10 engine.
May buy one for the wife in a year or so, and if I do -I'm gonna try talking her into the excursion, if I can't It'll be the Tahoe or Suburban, but not the Expy-at least not unless she wanted it so bad that if I did'int get it for her she'd cut off my benefits..lol.
In that case we'd have an Expy sitting in the driveway.
I'm confused. The GM 350 (5.7) was discontinued in 1998. 1999 models had the "new" engines... 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 I think.
The Ford 351 (5.8) also was discontinued in 1997. 1998 models (when the Expy began I believe) had the "new" Triton engines. 4.6, 5.4, etc.
Anyway, I think the Expy is a little more refined, and nicer looking. Very smooth power, and nice steering and handling. Gas mileage is absolutely awful though. I haven't driven a new Tahoe so I can't speak on that yet.
The Tahoe's motor is either the 4.8L or 5.3L. They are in no way related to the 5.7L 350. My parents have a 02 Yukon XL w/5.3L. It has awesome performance @ 285hp, but lacks torque. The 5.4L is better suited for a 6,000lbs truck like ours because of the torque advantage.
60ci per liter always worked for me when figuring out roughly what the displacemen is :P im sure that formula is more accurate but it gives u a good idea anyways
Im not sure, but have been in only Two tahoes, so cant speak for the majority of them, however the one I was n yesterday.. a 99 with 135,000 miles on it, felt much more solid, and better built than my 99 expy.. Things such as shift points on the tranny, felt like lower 1st gear, WAY better performance, and better handling off road weighed in on decision..
Not totally sure but gm has a lower first gear than ford. My 93 150 auto has a 2.75 first gear and I know my 87 chev had a 3.06 first gear. I think that might be why they take off quicker. I personally don't like the big gear drop from first to second.
