i have a 351w in my 78 f150. according to the block castings it from a fairlane or torino. i was wondering what year parts can i use the rebuild and add performance parts to this motor...
Although the casting #'s say it's from a Fairlane or Torino, it could also be from a truck too. The casting numbers only indicate what that part was designed for, not what it actually was installed in at the factory. Yours being a 78, would not have had a 351W though, I believe the choices then were the 300, 302, 351M , 400, and 460. As for parts, anything made for a 351W isn't going to be year specific and should be interchangeable. The only major change to them was the 94-97 roller block, but even that only affects cam choice.
thanks for all your input it helped alot the motor runs fine but im a hp junkie cant have enough of it in my eyes. it a little tired and is in need of some new parts... i was thinking edelbrock intake edelbrock cam some new lifters and other junk.but my budget is 1,000 what else is possible on top of the intake and cam.. already have a 650 edelbrock carb..
Figure out exactly what year motor it is ( date codes) and determine if it's ever been rebuilt. If it hasn't just knowing the year model it is, you'll be able to look up the comp ratio. Most 351's are anywhere from 8 to 1, to 9 to 1. I think only the 69 4 bbl motor had more.
That's the casting #. It only tells you when the block was designed and what it was designed for. Not actually when, and what it was installed in. The date code is next to the casting # ( for the block that is) it's a number/letter/number combination. Looks like a cast-in tag on the block. The head casting numbers are under the intake runners, date codes for them are inside the valve cover rail. Same number/letter/number combo
i found them 1h10 if i got this right it was casted on august 10 1971. what does that make the compression ratio?? by the way it has the firing order 15426378
Yea, 1H10 would be August 10 1971. But the Windsors all had the 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 firing order. Sure it's a Windsor and not a 302? How many intake bolts are holding it to the heads? Should be 16 for a Windsor of that year. 12 for a 302 or a 77-up 351W. If it's a 71 351 then the comp ratio should be 9 to 1, give or take a few tenths.
