351w and 302 intake manifolds are not interchangeable due to the higher deck height of the windsor. You have a 302. There are more performance parts for them than the 351w but as you know, there is no replacement for displacement. If you have the 302 mounts, the 351w will sit there nice and you should have adequate hood clearance (I do on my 78 with a 351w.) Sounds like you'd be happier building up a FE series big block instead of messing with the SBF. Watch those gas prices though if this thing is a daily driver! Good luck!
im not for 100% that thats what the firing order is thats just what the intake manifold shows..i added more pics of the motor also.
Don't need any more pics to tell you that's a 302. NONE of the 351's had the 15426378 firing order or had it cast into their intakes. And just by looking at how narrow the intake is compared to the carb, is enough to tell me it's a 302. Now, that said, while your truck may have come with a 302 from Ford, that one's not the original motor, based on the casting #'s and the rail style rockers on the heads. It's definately an earlier engine. If you want more power, you'd be better off in that pickup with a bigger engine. At least a 351 in size. You can build a 302 that will move it, but you'll spend more money doing it than with a larger engine. An excellant starting point for an engine in there would be a 94-up 351W, if you can locate one for a reasonable price. It will be a roller block, and can use any of the aftermarket roller cams the 5.0's use, plus the head selection is wide open there too. I agree with fordngneer with the FE power, but you'd need a donor truck to get all the parts needed to swap to a big block, a Windsor would be better in your case.
if thats the case does 351w valve covers fit a 302??? on the drivers side it has a 351w emisions sticker and on the other a withe rectangle sticker wit w1 witch = windsor engine plant 1 and a bunch of other letters and numbers.
indeed its a 302. 302 is casted in the head above the closest 2 push rods to the firewall...when i bought it i was told by the person i bought it from it was a 351w and he was sure of it 100%

Even though it is a 302, just because the heads have 302 cast into them, wouldn't mean it was a 302. The heads are interchangeable between the two, and someone could have put 302 heads on a 351 shortblock. The difference is in the taller deck block, longer rods, longer stroke crank and different pistons. The distributor and oilpan are also different from the 302.

how would you tell if the block was from a windsor?do you know any dimensions. whats the difference between distributors... will a oil filter from a 351 fit a 302. what about he fuel pump... i have changed both under the impression it was a 351 so thats the parts i got..
Just went out to my shop and measured the intake from my 351W, which is off for a cam change. It it ~11 inches wide. Narrower than that, and you have a 302/289/260/221.
The lower shaft on the Windsor distributor is larger and won't fit into a 302. The crank centerline to deck measurement is 8.206 ( slightly taller for the mid 70's blocks) and 9.5 for the Windsor.
If the left valve cover has a non-catalyst sticker on it, keep it! It is a jem in the 78 truck. That was the last year they made 'em like that and It may serve you well at inspection (meaning not having to run a cat) depending on the state you are in and how sharp the guys are at inspection. In NJ that is a big deal with the cali emissions standard we are on now with Parsons. Just an FYI if you wanted to keep the SBF format there.
