Posi rear end

What donor truck can i use to get a posi rearend for my 66? Also I have the original 9" rearend and can't remember if the axles have 28 or 29 splines. Can anyone tell me off the top of your head which it should be?

66 F series came with a 28 spline Ford 9" rear axle assy. OEM There are no 29 spline axles in the FoMoCo 9" rears. Some later models (73 & up) have 31 spline axles, but they are longer than the 66 housings can facilitate. Also I think bearings are slightly larger, and some came with the 2 piece bearings.

Traction Lock, Limited Slip, Equa-lok and Detroit Lockers from any 9" FoMoCo rear end with 28 spline axles will fit/work in '66 F Series housing, with axles the '66 comes with.
These are in Passenger Cars having 9" FoMoCo rears, as well as trucks, vans, full sized 65-72 Broncos. Some models of Mercury and a Lincoln Versailles had 28 spline axles with a traction device differential as listed above.

Many data plates of 60s & early 70s vehicles listed these rears using a letter instead of a number in the Axle Code. IOW an 09 is 3.70:1 ratio, open leg rear in 75 F100s and an A2 is a 3.70:1 ratio traction device in the same 75 F100. . Most likely an Equa-Lok.

Posi-Traction is GMs' trade name for their Brand X traction enhancing rear ends. If you had a Dana 40 rear instead of Ford 9", maybe you could use a Posi carrier in that. Point is FoMoCo does not have and never ever came with Posi Traction rear ends.

They only offer the types I named above. Alll have different advantages and pitfalls to them. I'll also tell ya' which one you choose could depend on what you're planning to do with it after you install it. For example a Detroit Locker in traffic is as bad a plan as running Limited Slip rears in Mud or Drag Racing.

What sort of rear end do you think I have? When I put the pedal down on dirt or pavement both rear tires spin, but if Im stuck in the mud, only one spins.

Thanks for the help.
