The switch I'm using now came from Speedway. I just looked it up, its rated at "180 amp continuous, 1000 amp instantaneous". All that amp stuff doesn't mean much to me. Like I said mine doesn't get cycled often. Cost $19.95...

'fenders..........."mine is junk already".... I'm curious as to what happened? ... Did it break some how, just stop working properly, smoke, fire?

I noticed the courtesy lights were on the other day. I thought I had killed the power. I had. I played with the switch and discovered the lights were brighter in the off position. Play with it enough and it will turn off. Only a matter of time before it competely fails. I have cycled it hundreds of times through my build, because I jacked with the audio so much. But still, it's a simple switch. I'm not cranking a 500 inch stroker motor. No way it should have died already.
The specs you posted are fine, but they were also fine on the one I no longer like.

I bought the metal switch before I started this thread. I just wanted to warn you guys because I thought a few of you also said you were getting the cheapo switch when we discussed it a few months ago. I should have the new one when I return to Iowa next weekend. I'll try to give you some more crappy free advice after I get my hands on it. The metal switches with good current ratings cost about $50 from speed catalogs. Under $30 shipped from ebay for the identical switch.

Fatfenders- I took your crappy advice on the old posts. LOL... I went out bought one at the local auto parts store. Mine's working fine right now. So I have time to wait for you to install your metal one, order one from ebay, and get some more crappy advice from you. Thanks.

How about the switches that are used on fire trucks and ambulances? Should be lots of these units in junkyards...
Well I have never seen a Fire truck or ambulance in a junk yard.. Thies are usally striped of all there usefull parts and than sold to the puplic.. When not there crushed it to a 2x2x4 2ton block.. ( hat make nice coffee table )
Some of the vendor catalogs have the cheap bolt on units with a green **** for under 10 bucks.(probably offshore) After replacing E.I.C. and fuel pump relays almost annually on my 89 Bronco (plow vehicle) I purchases a couple of them. They are ugly for sure but neither the Bronco or the John Deere failed to hold a charge last winter. They work, they're ugly but they've been very useful for me so far.
I'll watch for Fenders report after the test of time. My F-1 wont need one for several years at the rate I'm going

I paid $2.65 at walmart nearly as cheap as I have paid at the swap meetfor the green knobbers. I have the all metal high amp one on my vehicle for the past four years works succesfully. Ed ke6bl
you guys !!!! stop playing around !!! now do this. Go to Radio Shack, you've got questions ??? they've got answers !!! now see how simple that was ???
but seriously folks... here's what you need.. a gen-u-wine Caterpiller brand (read $$$$) power switch, rated at one gazillion megaamps and guaranteed to outlast the truck, the house and four d-6 bulldozers...
I seriously don't know the price since I ...er... 'appropriated' this one from work I can probably get a part # but if you call the Cat parts desk they will know what you want if you 'splain it to them...
The key is removable... has a serious CLICK into position (read very positive contacts) and has 1/4" brass terminals in what looks to be micarta base. this is a heavy duty switch... I'll see if I can get some details tomorrow..
I'd be afraid to find out the Cat price. Many years ago, a customer told us that if a dollar bill was painted Cat yellow, it was then worth ten dollars!

Reason: Spelling
Just do it right the first time. 1200A continuous duty, double pole (disconnects both positive and negative), NEMA 5 (stainless steel, air and water tight). Tuck that baby in the bed someplace and you're in business. Might make a good hood ornament too.
