hey guys, I have been thinking about my new dash panel idea for my new auto meter gauges and, now I probably won't be able to do it because i just finished my state inspection class and it says in the book that your turn signal indicators, high beam indicator, and brake warning indicator and parking brake indicator lights in the dash have to work or the vehicle will fail inspection in utah. so how would I be able to put my new auto meter gauges in the truck along with the new dash panel that i was planning on making for the truck. and still have those lights work? thanks.
get a wiring diagram and find out which wires in the wiring harness(that connects to the cluster) go to each of those lights, you can cut those and splice into them, then like he said use another type of light that you like for those...i wouldnt think they need to be labeled, but you might ask an inspection station about that........
Yup thats all part of making a custom dash and half the fun. No biggie, like stated use any kinda indicater light you please and mount em in your panel. Long ago a friend of mine made a custom dash for a mustang2 it wasnt a very good job but all the lights and stuff worked fine...
Iceman,
I've got a few pics in my gallery that show my led lights for my turn signals and high beam indicators with autometer gauges. I don't have the other indicators, but can't imagine it would be much more work to include them.....Don't let someone tell you that you can't do it.

thanks for the help guys I have thought of just splicing into the wires for those lights and then just putting in some new lights. and yes I think that the lights have to be labeled as to what they are because I just finshed taking a state safety inspection class this last week. do you guys have any links to a 78 f-150 wireing diagram thanks.
ok guys I have been looking at my dash today and I have noticed that I am going to run into problems with making my custom dash panel first of all how am I going to angle the gauges upward, and second what am i going to do to angle the panel where the heat controls and the radio are. because I don't have a welder and I don't know how to weld aluminum so for right now I think i'm screwed. and am thinking about just giving up on this whole idea. if anybody else has any ideas please feel free to post them. thanks.
i am making a pannel that goes behind the factory plastic trim. i can angle to match the factory cluster and also have the factory trim in place. instead of seeing factory guages you will see autometer behind the trim piece. that way it still looks factory.
hey guys I'm still thinking about putting the autometer gauges in, and have looked at several different ideas. but I have a question if I put the autometer gauges in will I have to use the sending units that come with the gauges or can i just use the sending units that came on my truck stock? thanks.
I like cornbread's idea, i have thought about doing taht. I will probably end up doing that because it is so hard to find a guage cluster in good shape. The only prblem i see with that is that there is fairly limited space compared to a setup similar to mclaughlin31's. You would just have to position and select your gauges more carefully.
does any body know if I could use the sending units that came with my truck, and just hook up the autometer gauges to the proper wires in the dash. thanks.
I am almost 100% sure you cannot. If your going to go through the trouble of installing autometer gauges, spend the extra time and use the new sensors and wiring. It will be well worth the time and then, you'll know they are going to work the first time.
P.S. I hate doing something twice.
