Guys,
I have a 2003 5.4 4x4 that has a engine whine noise. I was wondering if anyone else has experianced this problem and may have a fix for it? The noise starts at around 15-1800 rpm and goes up with the motor revs. It sounds like it is coming from the altenator but not sure. Has Ford had any issue with the altenator or anything on the drive belt causing this whine?
I have a 2003 F-150 FX4 and it was doing the same thing. The power steering pump is what was causing mine. Ford has now put 3 in it, and they say that the new one is whining "within limits." There was a problem with the pumps from what I understand from the dealership
If the bearings on the alternator are starting to go they will also cause the whine and any of the pullys around there like the tensioner pully. take a mechanics stethiscope and you can identify the sourse better, or if you don't have a stethiscope use a 3 foot rubber hose and move it around the area the place where the sound is strongest will sound the loudest. WARNING there are moving parts there be carefull not to get the hose or stethiscope caught in the fan or belt.
