Anyone ever used one of the pertronix Ignitors? I got the description off of a distributor's website. The also sell the Flamethrower coils too. Anyone seen one of these things in action? What did you think?
"Pertronix Ignitor will replace your points and condenser with a breakerless solid state high performance electronic ignition system at a low price that fits entirely under your stock distributor cap. Pertronix Ignitor will give your engine better fuel economy, more horsepower, longer plug life and all the advantages of an electronic ignition system. Pertronix Ignitor installs in less than 30 minutes in most cases."
Never used one myself, but everyone I talk to who has says it made a world of differnece. From what ive heared its a very relaible setup. I myself am crusing the junkyards for a nice Duraspark Electronic igintion to put into my 66, the old dizzy is really robbing my power.
Another alternative would be Crane XR 3000 and LX-91 coil. Supposed to be even better than Pertronix?? I am going to use Crane for my build this month. Don't know anything about it but I need to learn somehow!!
well I will let you know how the pertronix works sometime next week after I get it installed. I have decided to go ahead and get it ordered. Thanks for the info.
I put many dozens of them on boat engines. The only problem is, you must have a full 12 volt to it to make them function properly. The normal wire will have a resistor in it, there by dropping the voltage and you need to by pass it. Had one failure and the replaced it without a peep.
Cool man. You aren't talking to the most adept back yard mechanic in the world. Wiring isn't my specialty either. I have a feeling that there isn't a separate resistor. So I will put a meter on that wire and if it is less than 12V then I will bypass it. Now when I bypass it is there anywhere in particular that I should bring a new wire from? Like I said you kinda have to go slow on the wiring with me. Please be patient.LOL
I am glad you mentioned that because I probably would have had it running. Hey do you guys know anyone that has bought the Shop Manuals on CD for their truck from motorhaven.com? I'm just curious how they work and if it was worth it?
Fireman1212; any performance parts company like Summit will have the XR-3000. The lower performance (current capacity) version is XR-700 that was under the name of Allison many years before Crane purchased them. The trigger is optical not magnetic. I have 940,000 miles on a XR-700 without any problems but up graded to a XR-3000 and LX-91 coil. This is a inductive system not capacitive discharge. Plug checks only once a year.
