I second that about never going back to points again. I have a set of points, coil and capacitor as backup should the Crane XR-3000 ever fail. A Pertronix unit did fail us in a 57 Olds coming back from a car show 4:30 on a sunday morning, 32 miles from nothing on backroads. Olds has a Crane plus points backup now. Bitter with Pertronix as this was the second one to fail in 3 years.
I had several problems with the Pertronics seeming to fail (Hot engine), but when the customer brought it in it worked fine (cold engine). In the end that's when I found out about the 12 volts needed for hot operation and Pertronics changed their instructions. If the resistor or resistor wire are left in the unit will stop working or can fail totally. Never had one fail with 12 Volts to it.
Yo Bear, the unit on the Olds had clean 12 volt power, it failed. I HATE MSD! Went thru 4 of their ignition failures. The only unit available far as i'm concerned is CRANE, CRANE, CRANE. Sorry, it's kind of like a Holley thing for me also. I love Holley but the wifes name is Gayle, ha, ha!

Carl....=o&o>....
I'm a Holley guy too and I understand. Seeing as how I'm retired now and don't care if the pertronics break maybe has something to do with it. Then again the marine engines never run over 4600 rpms too.
> I'm just curious how they work and if it was worth it?
The CD works well enough and to me it was entirely worth the $50. Very pleased with mine, it is basically the shop manual on CD. No real search or index function since it is a collection of scanned pages.
Fireman1212, I have a pertronix on my 66 with a Jacobs coil and Mileage master controller. I had these from a previous truck and verified with Jacobs and Pertronics that all was compatible. I went with the pertronics because it was a drop in conversion and nobody else was even close on price. Haven't had a problem with it, but followed pertronics instructions, to the letter. JR
Standard heat range and plug (Champs) that was in before the swap. Instead of replacing plugs every 3-5,000 miles, now they run 25-30,000 before their worn (rounded center electrode edges). No more timing changes due to rubbing block wear or timing variations due to dizzy shaft and advance unit shaft slop / wear. Cleaner idle on cold startups, bigger, hotter spark. You get that chrisp clean running engine all the time provided centrifugal and vacuum advance are functional and operating smoothly. How many dizzy's have you seen that all pivots and rubbing contacts are full of rust powder? Steam clean or pressure water blast sure helps with rust.
