1978 F-250 4x4 with NP435. Approx. 130k on original trans.
When I shift from 1rst to reverse or vice-versa OR if I leave the trans in 1rst overnight, the trans locks up b/n gears. I can move the whole shifter around in a lg circle. When I release the clutch, the engine dies and the veh doesn't move. I have taken the shifter out and looked inside and the piston for 1rst/2nd is slides way past 1rst. It is almost as if the shifter slid out of the gate. What needs to be done to fix it?
Steve it sound like you may have either broke a fork, or it is so worn it has jumped from it's groove. The only way to tell for sure is to pull the top cover off the tranny.
In any case it's an easy fix.
