Smile Oil plug torque spec.

Does anyone know what the standard torque spec is for a stock oil pan drain plug? Just wondering.

Definitely don't do 200ftpds, yeow, that's as much as some crank pulleys use.

Wild guess would be maybe 30-40 ft pounds but I have always gone with snug to the feel using a regular 3/8 drive ratchet. I have always been pretty good about not honking down bolts, so it surprises me that so many of my friends snap them off all the time.

One trick I have heard, but not needed is use the standard ratchet, and use two fingers on the shaft and just pull thru without using your thumb or other fingers. Most men cannot put enough torque on it to be a problem with only two fingers. But then there is my buddy's dad who used to use his bare hands to put tires on rims.

I really don't know the answer other than "snug" and that 200 foot pounds is almost surely way too high and not easy to do, lying on your back with a 3/8 drive, or even a good 1/2 drive torque wrench. That's alot of torque, Most oil pans are pretty thin sheet metal and I have seen more than a few with wrinkles in the metal from over tightening, not by me tho.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

My Chilton's say 15 to 25 ft/lbs and I would lean toward the 15 rather than get carried away. If you stripe it out it becomes a PITA.
