I'm installing something on top of my bed rails. In drilling down into the rails, I don't seem to hit metal until I get about 2" deep (including the equipment I'm mounting), as the upper part of the rail appears to be some composite material.
Does anyone know of a source for #14, 2 1/2" self-tapping screws? I suppose there's probably a reason that they're not really common (didn't find them at Home Despot), but I have no options that I know of. I can't get to the underside, so a bolt/nut option is out.
Screws such as you are looking for are often used to attach wooden floors to trailer frames. They are available at several trailer parts dealers. The link below is to TJ Trailers who have them in a couple of sizes. These are black oxide and require a 7/32nd hole but they are self threading.

The ones that TJ sells is fine except I need either a pan head, or (ideally) a hex head. The fastener is going through a flat surface. Though I suppose I could countersink it, but that seems kind of odd to do to aluminum.
McFeely's also sells a self-tapping screw for trailer floors that you might be able to use.
