I am considering which one? I would appreciate anyones input on this question. I had a programmer and had problems with it now the manufacturer does not want to stand behind it. So I am going to consider this a little more carefully this time. I lean towards the downpipe in my 96 but really enjoyed the punch from the programmer. Does the new pipe make that much of a difference in power? I know it needs to be done for heat before I decide on much more modifications. I cut my cat and replaced the factory muffler with a 24" resonator right after warranty expired. I bought my Microtuner in 2002 and was happy with that. Thanks for your help everyone.
Downpipe won't help the power noticably, but it will help lower EGT. I have an Edge Evolution tuner & it works well. Shifts are a bit high in 80- & 100-hp modes & EGT will get out of hand when towing unless I watch it like a hawk. Earlier testing with an SCMT gave me the impression of better mileage; now that I have gauges & downpipe, I'm going to try the SCMT again to see if the mileage change was a fluke.
Which programmer did you have? I have a hypertech on my 99 7.3 and it has been great. Can't imagine not having it now! If I deprogram it the truck feels sluggish. Good luck!

by the way where is angelton? I'm in Garland just outside of Dallas.
Do the downpipe. With these engines, it's important to build a foundation to work with. Everyone will tell you to start here:
1. Improved Intake (tymar, AFE...)
2. Open Exhaust (downpipe and 4" the rest of the way)
3. Gauges (to monitor things)
4. Chip programmer... (which has much more punch with what you have already)
I know you want the power now, but you will be damaging your truck or at least be wearing the engine out faster if it's running hot all the time. with a programmer, you can climb to a damaging temp in less than 10 seconds and that's why gauges are important. Intake and exhaust are important because these trucks burn 20,000 gallons of air for every gallon of diesel!!!
Jesus_man's got it right, you need to do the little stuff before cranking up the power. The exhuast and intake may not make the truck feel much different now, but the truck will be much happier when you do add the tuner or chip on top of the basic mods. Just my .02 but pyro, boost, and tranny temp ( for automatics ) gauges should be included from the factory, and are mandatory before any major power increase is made. Get the basics done ( air in, air out, and the guages so you know whats going on ) then crank the power up, you'll be much happier with the end result.
