I was driving my modified 400 ( pretty much the hot rod magazine build but with headers and eddy 650 carb) for the first time outside of my neighborhood (first time not just putting in around) and after I gunned it at one stop sign and then at the next the car would sputter and lose power. I replicated the situation and each time got the same behavor.
so my question is.. Is the stock fuel pump enough for a 600 cfm edelbrock performer carb?
In my opininion the stock pump isn't good enough even for a stock engine. The reason is with todays fuel vapor lock is very common and the mech pump absorbs heat from the block. I prefer electric pumps.
You might also make sure your float level isn't too low.
I had a similar problem but it happened at the end of the 1/4 mile track and that was with a 1405 carb stock jets. last 100 or so feet it dropped to 1-2psi and lost power. my mech pump at the time had 90k miles and a new one did fixed the problem. since then I have went with electric pump so no more worries there. so as it looks just temporarily hook up a gauge and or check your carb settings.
u can never have too many gauges.
oddly enough when I drove it today it didn't hick up at all, but I do have some more problems,
First off does the kick down only affect 2,3 shifts or does it also effect 1,2 shifts? I currently dont have a kick down installed and the car seems like its shifting into 2nd way too early when its under hard acceleration.
Second, how in he$$ do you hook up and adjust the electric choke? I have the top terminal going to a power source off of the alternator, and the bottom one going to ground on the block. the problem is that the choke never wants to open completely. I have loostened up the screws and tried to adjust it but no matter where i adjust it to it either won't open all the way or is open when cold.
Oh its also like 75 degrees here if that has any bearing on it.
for changing your upshifts you will need to find the Vacuum modulator on the side of the tranny. pull off the vacuum line and turn the adjustment screw clockwise to make it shift at a higher rpm. start with 1 full turn, drive it and fine tune from there.
as for the setting the choke plate it sounds like your adjusting the choke cap or thermostate which only controls how long or how soon the choke is closed. to adjust its fullest open position you wll need to address the linkage itself..
