ok, ok. Still amazed us how little those suckers were driving cross-country a few years ago. The Canuks in British Columbia know what I'm talking about- same story.
Only thing I've hit is a bird here and there, one that I can recall is the one I hit with my mom's X doing a buck five, all I saw was feathers.
I've seen a great dane hit by a low rider, the car was air born over the dog, the freaky thing was the dog got up and ran off, I don't know if the dog lived after that.
dissing on midwest deer? it's those southern deer that are tiny! I gotta defend my local wildlife. They can't speak very well for themselves. They're pretty good sized here in Missouri. The further south you go, the smaller they get... anyway, sorry for changin the subject.
I've got to 'fess up- I was tweaking the subject just a little bit. I nailed a neighbors cat a few years ago, and felt absolutely awful (heck, I'm not even fond of cats!). Worse yet, having to tell the neighbors what happened to their kids kitty.
I hit a puppy once and he survived. I got out because I knew I hit something and I just about sheered the pad of a foot off. So, I picked up the puppy, wrapped him up, and went to the house he was near for help.
I found the owner. After a few choice words about how stupid it was to let a puppy not even bigger then a small cat run around free on a busy city street it turns out they had no way to get to the vet AND they did not have money to pay any bill.
I ended up taking the puppy to the vet and leaving my own $50 (which 15 years ago was a lot of $) with instructions to put him under if he could not be saved cheaply and given to a new home. Some people
Not to bring this back to the subject of deer but....
As polarbear eluded, you hit a deer here in the PNW, you're in for some serious damage.
Back in the early seventies, my father hit a big Muley while driving his '68 VW Bug. The deer took-out the fender, the hood, the windshield and door, and still got up to leave the seen of the crime!
That's no joke. The kid and a buddy took a 3 by 4 out in Eastern Oregon last fall, and they think it weighed 220ish. Real struggle to get it out of a ravine, and both kids can bench-press about 200 (they're not small guys). There's a 5-point that lives in the forest behind our house. We've got a 5' fence, and I can see the top of his ears and all of his antlers when he walks by. Drives our Afghan crazy- he's a little north of 140, and the deer isn't the least bit intimidated by him. Also drives the kid crazy (protected area).
Must be one of those little Mid-West deer. Hit one out here and it could total the truck if it's older. Then there's always elk to watch out for going to the Coast You'll know if you smack one of those things.
Don't overlook the moose we've got running around over this way .
Ive seen em now hunting 3 years in a row, first time Iwas walking up a game trail on a steep incline, I was more into getting to the top than hunting right at the moment, we walked right into the middle of them, they didnt notice, and neither did we, until I looked up.....OMG the bull of the group was HUGE
they ran off, thank god, they can be mean. the previous two years, its only been from the 4 wheeler That Ive seen em
I hit a dog when I was 17. It lived. It was a farm dog that comes running out of the ditches. Well he came out and ran right into my passenger door. I remember seeing his butt and tail flipping by the windows.
Stopped and checked on him. He was sitting there by the road whining and his head was wobbling. The world must of been spinning on him, probally gave him a good headache. The farmer came out and said I hope he learned a lesson to stop car chasing.
Now hitting deer is another story. I hit one 7 years ago. Got lucky. He came running out of the ditch and I got my car slowed enough on the icy road that I bumped his back legs 3 times never knocking him down. I was down to about 5mph. Got a kicked out headlight and the rubber strip on the bumper got tore.
When I worked in the body shop 20 some years back had 2 cars come in that had hit deers.
One was an 1980 Monte Carlo. The hood was all rippled and the windsheilkd was gone, the passenger side of the seat was busted off and the interior was all most destroyed. Had to replace dash, seats and roofliner. The guy was lucky it did not come in on the drivers side.
The other was a 73 Ford Ranchero. He too caught a deer on the fly. We never did fix that one the insurance would not let us. He caught the deer at the A pillar on the passenger side and peeled the roof right open that it was laying in the box. The roof looked like a sradine tin had been opened.
Deer can cause a lot of damage and death up here.
I hit a dog when I was 14, driving around my neighborhood. Little sucker came out of nowhere yapping its head off and ran right under my rear tire. It made so much noise that the owners came out to see what was going on, so I told them what had happened. They wern't mad at me, they gathered it up and took it to the vet. I checked with them the next day and they said they'd had to put it down, its back was broken. I felt terrible. Hit a deer once, had to finish it off. Hit a fawn once, broke its leg. My buddy took it home and his family took care of it, it was getting very friendly and then one morning it was dead. Bummer. Another time I had a puppy run under the tires of our van, sqaushed its little head. I really felt bad about that one. Nailed a cat once, it just tumbled and kept running, don't know if I hurt it badly or not. And then there was the time someone hit my dog. She was lying in the back of my truck while I played softball with some of the neighbor kids, and suddenly decided to jump out and cross the road to join us. I didn't even notice until I heard the thump and the yelp. The road was perfectly straight there and one of the kids that saw her said she was just walking across. The drug dealers in the Datsun pickup that hit her were all staring at the 14-yr-old girl playing softball and not looking at the road, so none of them saw my dog till it was too late. They did turn around and come back, nasty things were said on both sides and one of them pulled a gun on me. The other two grabbed him and hustled him off, and we took my dog to the vet for about 500 bucks worth of surgery. She came out of it okay, except for a huge mass of scar tissue on her side that never grew any hair after that. Not a good day. -TD
yeah i know its not my fault, but i have had dogs hit before and know how badly it sucks. my own dog even had a little thing for chasing cars for a little while, about 8-10 feet of chain and a choke coller fixed that really quickly (put em up close to the road and let him hit the end of that chain). sometimes it take a little tough love.
i have also hit a deer before, just got my permit. i hit the brakes in wyoming and stopped in nebraska! the van started to go sideways and i hit it with the right front then it spun around and hit the side door. a hinge bolt punched a hole clean through the door. we replaced the turn signal lens and drove it nearly 100,000 more miles.
