2.9 transmission prob

hey i have a ranger 2.9 v 6.
driving it the other day, working fine no slips or anything in the transmission, except it took it longer to shift from first to second than usual. well i parked it then got in it to leave and it would not pull in forward. it will go good in reverse. luckily i wasnt far from home so i had to reverse it to the house. my question is , is there anything that could cause this other than the transmission being shot.
i have checked the fluid level and it is full.
thanks for any responses

I'm not a tranny ace by any means, but I suppose there could be a failure in the valve body. I'd also check the shift linkage just for good measure.

On edit: maybe posting this in the Ranger forum will give better visibility and hopefully more ideas.

Is the fluid level normal? If it's low, is it being sucked into the engine through the vacuum modulator?

when you say FULL how full we talking about? anything past the mark on the gauge
is bad for a trans , so is having low fluid .

what color is the fluid? what are we dealing with here auto/stick?
before coming to the conclusion of a rebuilt check out the basics first.
