I have a 2WD 1990 2.9L V6 manual transmission Ranger with 206,000 miles on it. Never done any work on transmission or clutch other than normal transmission fluid changes. It is very noisy in 1,2,3 and 5th gears - 4th is quiet. Truck runs well, but noise is pretty loud and concerning me. Any ideas?
I was talking to a friend about this problem and he tells me that it might be the throwout bearing. Does anyone out there think that might be likely, based on the way I have described the noise. It seems so strange to me that it is very quiet in 4th gear but very noisy in every other gear (except when clutch is depressed).
It could be the main shaft bearing in the transmission also. If you can rest your foot of the clutch pedal and the noise goes away, most likely the cause is the throw out bearing.
You see its one of your main bearings that is if the noise goes away in forth gear (1 to 1 ratio therefor there is no load) I am a transmission guy so I know that for a fact. The throw out bearing is oly engaged or spinning when the clutch pedal is pushed down. If anyone needs trans help I'm game !
