I'm looking at getting a complete MSD ignition team with taylor custom fit wires from truckperformance.com. i have a 1995 4.9L and was wondering if anybody had used this upgrade and if they saw gains in using it. Also the kit says i do not need to replace my stock coil, but would replacing it enhance the performance of the ignition?
Thanks for any help ya'll can give.
Unless you are running a carb'd engine or moded out the ying yang that probably wont help you for ****t. I'm sure someone will come on here and give you the scientific reasons speech for why it won't but, i don't realy remember the whole shpeal and don't feel like saying it anyways. Though if you do get it i would upgrade the coil, hotter spark is always good. Msd is mostly just good for fast consistent sparks not realy much help with a stock engine and atomization won't improve much if any. Definetly not 300$ worth like most of msd setups. This is just my opinion nothing more but, i would save a few more bucks and p&p the heads and probably put a aftermarket cam in. Though your factory computer will have problems with these upgrades with a p&p + a cam your looking at probably 40hp more outa the old 300. You would probably pay about 500 bucks to have your custom chip made to deal with the added 50 hp. Anyways good luck with whatever you decide on.
you would be wasting your money if you got that stuff. if you were spinning 6500 rpm and over it would help a little but the 300 can't go that high. msd's dizzies burn out often i hear. the tfi ignition is one of the best stock ignition back in the day.
I put a 6a and TFI coil on my truck about 2 years ago. I'm happy with the performance, but it wasn't worth the $200 it cost me. The throttle response seems a little more crisp at times, but probably not noticable to most people. If you need a new coil anyway, go for the MSD. It's a nice piece. The box isn't worth the extra $150 until you throw some compression at it.
i'm not a big fan of using msd ignition in a mostly stock vehicle. those things are meant for high-performance applications, certainly not for general reliability. msd claims 1% failure rate, but i've had 2 6A boxes fail on me, in 2 different trucks. there really wasn't any difference in performance either. the tfi is definitely a good system...it just doesn't get much recognition because it's factory. same with the duraspark on older trucks...give it a more powerful coil, and it's great.
I've had MSD on 3 different rigs:'69 Mustang 351C, '77 Scout 196, and Honda CRX 1.5. All were carbed, and showed better starting, mpg's, and smoother running. Their Quality has been sketchy over the past few years, so I can't say it's worth it anymore.
