Fuel filter replacement

Went to change the fuel filter on my 97 EB 5.4 Exp. Took off the external clip and the fuel line. A small clip came out when I got the filter seperated from the fuel line. It is easily bent and of course I bent it a bit. What purpose does this serve? The replacement was the wrong filter (Nothing past the little "bulge" where it inserts into the line) and did not come with a new clip. I could'nt get that little clip back in, hooked up the line and external clip and there are no leaks...............Getting the correct filter today, do I need a new internal clip or am I ok without it?

They make a special sissors type clamp that slides down the metal fuel line. You push it into the filter and then you will be able to pull it apart and seperate the filter from the line. Those clips as you refer to are supposed to stay inside the fuel line receiver. You fuel system is also under pressure so I am sure that if you dont install it correctly you will have a fuel leak/fire hazzard. If you do a search you will find out more information about how to chage it out correctly. I have never had the retaining clip come out so I dont know how to help you on getting it back in. Just make sure when you eventually figure it out that you make sure fuel isnt spraying out under the car when you start it up.
