We bought a used 06 Expy about a year ago. I just replaced plugs and wanted to replace the fuel filter also. The problem is that the side with the blue locking piece you press to release it is damaged. The blue tab is broke. The tab that you press is the only thing missing. There is still a little bit of the blue clip sticking out of both sides of the line where it slips over the filter. Has anyone made their own locking clip like this and if so how? How do I get it apart and what do I use to make a clip? I thought that if I could get it apart I could just slip the line back on the filter and secure it using zip ties between the lines on each side of the filter. Any ideas?
Can you use a small screwdriver to depress what's left of the blue tab to release the line? It's spring loaded, so you would just have to slide the line onto the new filter and it would hold. Sounds like somebody that didn't know what they were doing tried to pry out the blue tab instead of depressing it. Did they at least put a new filter on? Maybe it doesn't need changing yet after all Ugh ... They've used a few different type releases on these trucks over the last 25 years and some folks haven't come across these newer blue tab press to release lines yet.
I tried using needle nosed pliers to push the remaining pieces on each side hoping that would spread it enough to release. I tried that for about an hour with no success. I guess I can give it another whirl this weekend.
Pay the few extra bucks and have your local mom and pop shop do it. With it up on a lift it could be a whole lot easier to get off. Bring the filter and new clips with you to save time and money.
I should've asked earlier, but did your fuel line connectors look like these ? This is what's on my '03 Expod, I just assumed they were the same for your '06.
These are the tool-less push button to release type.
These probably just have to be replaced if they are broken, the older style that used a tool to release, or had the slide in clips could be repaired pretty easy.
Yeah I'm not sure how they recommend repairing these retaining ends. I guess if you can find them online you can just cut the old ones loose and shove the new pieces in the lines.
They have a barbed end that slides into the fuel line. But they are a tool-less design, you just push the blue button in and it releases. Line snaps back on.
Good luck, let us know what you find out.
