humvees's (h1) use a portal hub in the knuckle as well on all four corners, and they have somewhere in the neighborhood of 12-16" of travel, it may not seem like they have that much but its because of the spring stiffness is my guess, but as far IFS/IRS systems go the h1/humvee's are the best setup do to the fact that the portals they use allow the shafts to live under extreme use, and i believe there is a hummer knuckle with portal hub for sale on ebay.

I spent 3 years working on HMMWVs in the Army. Yes, the H1 is a very capable rig, but they hang tires very easily. The setup they have does not allow a lot of down-travel. Up travel is OK, but suspension-wise, the H1 is not really that impressive. On a side note, the geared hubs they have (portal) are junk. They have the same problems as unit-hub bearings on new trucks. The bearings are too close together to have any real strength with large tires (replaced a lot of those).

I have seen a setup (in a mag.....) of an independently suspended 4WD rock buggy that had a claimed 46" of wheel travel all the way around. The axle shafts appeared to be about 2.5 inches in diameter and the joints were covered with large CV boots that covered up the guy's secret. If the mag wasn't fibbing (.....) then I think it's entirely possible. Expensive, but possible.

Humm i thought the H1's portals were a bit more tougher than that, but i thinks its still a good concept though for an ifs rig to have portals in the knuckles.

That rig you're talking about Cody was walker evan's rock buggy, they junked the ifs in favor of a solid 60 (well acctualy the centersection in the thing was a dana 60 to for the ifs), if i remember right (in a later issue) they said that the rig didn't sidehill worth a darn and a few other things that i can't wuite remember (i think they have something about in the latest issue of petersons).
