Question chevy vs ford

Ok now in the past we have had some problems with the transmissions in the 3 Aerostars we had. I hope this is the right place. Anyway back in 2003 we decided to look at buying a chevy. And is has been a very reliable vehicle for us we bought it with 59k and it now has over 112k. Now are Aero has been relaible too. The point of this post is that I think that chevys have a little better trannys than the Fords do. but the Fords are better designed than the chevys are.
Another thing I want to add is I also think that the only vehicle that chevy made that is reliable and decent is the cavalier. fordguy101

congrats on the new chevy. i won't comment on the torqueshift right now, i think we all know what a sore subject that is. is the 6.0 PSD your idea of quality. How about the old V6 fords with head gaskets?

That is all off the top of the head.

I am sure I won't hear the end of the 6.5, but oh well.

Yah the blue oval and the bowtie will the debate ever end. Its safe to say that Ford has had the better diesel for 22 years and GMs had the worst. Pre duramax era and pre 6.0 era. The jury is still out on those engines. Fords has
had the better overall truck less problems overall compared to GM. Ford cars included. Yup Ford guy here. No bowtie in my stable. And it looks like Ford has the hot car off the year the 2005 Mustang. What does GM have 2005 GTO no competition for Mustang. Ah Im on a Ford high. Long live the blue oval.

Personally, I think I'll paint a blue oval on one side of the driveway, a gold bowtie on the other half, and then paint the curb around the corner no ricer parking- vehicles will be towed.

As far as trannies go, the 350/400 turbo seem to be the way to go for a street rod,but those same t-buckets will have a Ford 9inch in the rear, not to mention the Ford body(I think Ford has always had the edge in styling except for '55,56,&1957)So, every company has that thing they do really well. It is undisputed that the General has made some worthy transmissions. But does this make them better??My blue blooded brain says........................NO!!!

Personnely I think this is a gross over simplification. Out of all the vehicles I have driven I have only had one tranny that every had any problems and that was GM 700R4. Went through 3 of them in less than a year with under 30K on the vehicle.

But this does not lead me to say that Ford trannies are any better than Chevies. The 700R4 went on to become a very good tranny. What I do believe is that each manufacture has buillt some very good trannies and when that tranny is used for the intended purpose and maintain they provide outstanding performance and life.

Just like the 700R4 I expect the Torqshift will will also prove to be a very good tranny. Down side to this though is it will be replaced I think soon by a 6 speed tranny, just my guess.

Fact it todays trannies are governed by electronics. Either a weak spot in the tranny or bad programming can cause troubles. In the past we only had to worry about mechanical problems.

I wouldn't say across the board that GM builds better transmissions.

Sept '99, I bought a F150, one of my coworkers bought a Silverado that same month. He 85K before needing a new trans. Completely shot, had to be towed. Meanwhile I got 142K on my E4OD and the trans was just beginning to slip. FWIW, I towed more than him by a long shot.

A transcooler works wonders with all brand transmissions if using for towing.

A lot of it is determined by how it is maintained and how it is treated by the driver. Small habits make a big difference.

I promis I won't argue I'll Just list the a few Gm Issues that I know of right off the top

well as some already said the poor excuse of a diesel the 6.5 was, no need to beat a dead horse
Piston Slap on a palethera of engines (3.1L, 3.4L, 3.8L, 5.3L, 8.1L, ect you get the Idea)
intake gaskets on the V-6s
Rear Brake calipers on 89-96s
also rear struts on 89-98s
how about that great V-8, the 305 (yeh thats great for a laugh)
the oil burning 8.1L, I mean most GM big blocks
rattly cabs in the xcabs 3rd & 4th doors
the bug eyed style of the new pickups (my personal opinion)
the wonderfull $10k 4wheel steer option thats all but extinct
the idea of rolling the engine forward for service because they didn't leave enough room to get even the spark plugs out
the trans that came in the wifes lumina almost rivals the ford torque EDITED BY ADMIN
also the GMs over heating pick up tranies (mid 90s)
lastly, just an opinion, the style of those avalanches are the worst eye sore yet

Ford & Dodge both make a palethera of junk but I thought this would add a little fuel to the fire.

A refreasher on Guidelines...thought it a good time

Use of symbols *** or characters to mask profanity and expletives is prohibited and undermines the spirit of the guidelines. The use of foul language is also prohibited, the goal of Ford Truck Enthusiasts, Inc. is to be a family friendly service and such content undermines that goal.

SLE,

I've been around Chevy's and Fords since the day i was born and all that you mentioned is merely BS, if your a mechanic you would know what to fix and how it fix it.
