1) You say the Banks kit is for a SD. You didn't say whether you are getting the whole installation kit, or just the I/C core. The factory SD pipes are not a direct fit onto our year trucks, so it is likely that the Banks pipes (if you would be getting those) would not be a direct fit either.
2) Regarding the Hack Job! The Banks I/C will retrofit into your 97 with some fabrication and cutting, just as if you were retrofitting a factory SD I/C into your truck. Depending on where you "cut out" for the inlet and outlet for the I/C will effect how much metal you remove. Its not that you remove a lot, but depending on where you cut, you may have to cut through the double-thickness section of the radiator support.
3) Even if you were buying the whole Banks kit, the Y-pipe will for a SD will not fit your turbo. The early 99 trucks had the same turbo we have and as such the Early-99 Y-pipe from Ford will fit right in.
In total, the Banks I/C will fit and it is more efficient that a factory SD I/C. You do have to cut out some of your radiator support for the install, but no more than required for th SD retro.
I have done the 99+ SD retrofit. If you are interested in pictures and the write up in the install (including part numbers) there are on My Intercooler Install Webpage
ya its the whole kit..brand new w/pipes and everything..i called and banks said the same thing bout fitting the turbo....guess i'll go w/the right one..wont be from banks though.im lookin at a ats i/c.ive used them b4 with a full turbo kit on my 6.9...it saved the truck from the junkyard! cause it was so slow till the ats went on..was really impressed w/ats...also the i/c about $500 cheaper...
Do your research carefully if you are looking at the ATS kit that boasts a "no cutting" installation. The kit I am thinking of routes the pipes down low, under the radiator support and back up behind the bumper. That kits uses very small diameter pipes. Seems pretty restrictive and limiting on how far you could go with other mods before that would become the bottleneck! Be careful before ya' buy!
The banks IC is a nice unit, I have no idea of how hard to retrofit into an OBS re IC truck, but the banks unit...in and of itself is a nice piece. I have one in my 7.3 Excursion and compared to the stock IC ends...the chambers along side the IC that run verticle.....they offer more room to get more use of the IC rather than Ford's rather restrictive design.
Talk to Geoff @ gtsmotorsports. He sells a install kit for a intercooler. Just buy a 99+intercooler off ebay and his kit and your set. You can intercool your truck for about 750 bucks.
well w/the exchange and duties its more like 750-800 cdn just for the kit...the new banks i/c on ebay was at 510 us plus duty yadda yadda.. last time i looked...it would be cheaper to buy straight from banks by the time i paid all the bs...im gonna keep looking around here in the meantime...there are 2 im looking at for about 1200 US...
thanks for ur help
so i just got off the phonw w/an ats guy and he says the intakes go around the bottom of the rad support and that i would not suffer any lose of boost or performance over the through the rad support style i/c's ...but i dont believe him...its like the straight headers in the old days..fenderwell headers on the old dodge 340...straighter the better rite?...
hey ltfox
