Timing
Have had overheating problems on my stock 76 460 F250, found to be total timing, have reduced from 52 to about 40 . Does anyone know what it should be and a easy way to reduce it more (ran out of adj. on the vac adv.)

36-38@3000 rpm is about right. When I bought a new distributor for my 460, it had the large vacuum advance diaphram unit on it and I was getting about 60 deg. of total advance from 12 deg initial. I changed the vac. adv. unit to a smaller one off of an old 302 distributor that I had laying around and it dropped to 38 total with 12 initial.

What is the intitial timing set at? Also the engine should sound like a case of old coke bottles rattling (pinging) down the road with this much advance. How are you checking this total advance? With the vacuum line from the carb disconnected from the dist. and plugged? Something is seriously wrong to be able to get that much advance.
