A stock c-6 completely dry and convertor holds 12 quarts, put about 7 in then start the truck and let it circulate. If you only drain the pan and change filter, its 6 quarts.
Use whatever it says on the dipstick. I had a c6 rebuilt a couple of years ago and tried to switch it to Dextron but was told it couldn't be done because of certain properties in the type F weren't in the Dextron and it wouldn't last long without them.
i put amaco dextron tranny fluid in my tranny and powersteering because the bottle said right on it that it was good for older Ford autos, within 30 seconds i didnt have powersteering anymore, and my tranny wouldnt shift right........i had to remove and drain the PS pump and put in fresh type F, the transmission was another story, i drained the pan but it wasnt enough, the fluid in the TC was polluted with it, and i wasnt about to pull the tranny i put in 3 months before when i swapped in the 460, so i toughed it out and delt with the poor shifting until it finally subsided, you see at the time my tranny coolant lines were leaking pretty bad, so it only took a couple weeks for the rest to leak out and slowly be replaced with type F.........personally i would stick with type F, but if your mechanic is reputable and tells you to switch then listen, and get it in writing, so if something goes wrong you have something to fall back on......
I'm glad I ran across this thread....IIRC, my '79 says to use Dexron (don't hold me to that). Didn't know you could use Type F in place of it though.....I still have some Type F from my old '77, and was wondering what to do with it. Won't hurt anything to keep using then?
