It's a regular Taurus 3.0 6cyl. I tried to find out what's going on (check engine light has been activated) by "buying" the OBD-1 scanner from O'Reilly (they let you buyu it for $215 and then credit you back upon return). But, I nor they could find the interface on the car for it!
So,
1) Does anyone know where you plug in the OBD-1 scanner on the 92 Taurus? Looked all under the hood and dash with no luck!
I bought used (123k miles) and have changed the Fuel Filter, plugs, wires, cap rotor. Radiator has leak and I have bought a new one to replace.
One problem - The carwill start and if I let it run for a while (5 minutes) and then reverse and then drive it WILL run. If I just start it up, reverse and then drive...it stalls out. So, it definetly has a power problem...EXAMPLE - If you start it cold and then twist the steering wheel back and forth real quick the power steering is enough to get it to stall cold (strange huh!!).
I think it's the idler air flow valve, but wouyld like to be certain.
2) Any idea of other parts that may be causing the power /idling problem?
3) Today (just started) it is now idling high (too high because when I let off the gas it maintains speed). The tranny now shifts better (another issue) but when I come to a complete stop it revs up and then lurches as it downshifts (very hard). Any thoughts!
4) If I take it in for tranny fluid/filter change...do you think it will do more harm than good?
Hello. I've replaced the Idler Air flow valve and no longer have the 'Engine Light' coming on. However, (even before I changed the Idler Air Flow valve) the idle seemed to pick up substantially. It now runs too high. I adjusted the cable and yet it still runs too high. It no longer stalls after starting it BUT it now shifts very hard when com9ing to a stop. Also, when putting back into park. It's as though I had one foot holding the gas down while stopping or putting into park. Does anyone know excatly what the "Throttle position sensor" does? I was thinking of replacing that since it is only about $25 but wasn't sure what exactly it will benefit me!
Does anyone know if you can use R-134 for a R-12 system? If not, is there a substitute for R-12?
You would need to change fittings, usually in the kit you would buy. You should change the receiver/dryer as these are also a filter and should be changed. About all I can think of. Also I would do a search online as I have heard of a product called Freeze12 that takes the place of R-12. You must have the old R-12 recycled and a vacuum pulled on your system before adding R-134a.

If you want to use R-134, you have to make a few changes to your current system. If you do the changeover, then do it once and do it right. Pick up the kit from Ford (yea it costs a little more) and then follow the directions in the kit. You also might obtain a tip or two HERE.
