Lately I've noticed a clattering for the first few seconds when starting my truck in the mornings. I've heard the type of oil filter can cause this. I have been using filters from Carquest and 10-W30 oil. Anyone else use these filters and have this problem, or do I have something else wrong?
Hi, I go to advance auto and buy motorcraft filters for the same price as all the others and they have anti drain valves in them. The best thing to do is change the filter and see if the noise goes away if not then you have other problems.

Have you recently changed brand of oil. When I use a Pennsylvania crude like Quaker State or Penzoil I get a clatter. If I use Castrol or Havoline I do not. Used to use Fords oil but they changed the formulation and I now get clatter.
My current truck has a 300 I6 and once a couple of years ago the quicke lube place didn't put Castrol in. I was back next day and they changed it for free because they screwed up and used Penzoil.
It's not like I change oils every other change, this is many vehicles over a lot of years. I currently use Castrol 10w30 in my Fords.
I'd say it's the anti-siphon on the filter. I've been real happy with purolators pure-one filter. It's a little pricey but I think it's worth it. Also I have heard nothing but bad things about fram's...Gary
I have a 300 also, and, will vouch that WIX # 51515 is the best filter for the 300. I too had a rattle at start up after a long sit, and noticed that the oil gauge seemed to not respond as quick as I liked. The rattle naturally would go away as soon as the oil gauge responded, so I knew that oil filter was taking a long time to fill up. I started trying different filters week by week until finally, I caught my senses and purchased the WIX.....problem solved !....big time ! All the other filters stated that they had anti-drainback valves, but the only brand that does the job on the 300 because of its horizontal position on the side of the block, was the WIX. Try it out.
