Ratcheting noise...
85 F250 4x4 300-6 4spd has recently, and gradually it seems, started making a metallic sounding clicking noise (kinda like the winch on your boat trailer). I notice it when coming to a stop sign or light or cruising thru parking lot, etc...only at low speeds. This is with the hubs locked and transfer case in either 2wd or 4wd. The clicking noise goes up/down with vehicle speed, occurs with clutch in or out, drive or coast, and it sounds as if it might be coming from directly under the cab in tranny/ transfer area. Vehicle has all new u-joints; no probs with 4wd engagement or operation. Any idear what I might want to be thinking about in the near future? Thanks again.

I had the same type of noise, and my transfer case went up about 2 days later. if you have a np208, it has a nylon gear called the annulus gear. it can gradually wear out. check the fluid for signs of plastic or nylon in it. if you catch it early, it isn't too bad to repair. what will happen if this is your problem, is transfer case will pop out of gear, and grind.

I was afraid of that. It is a NP208 and its original with 142K and the truck has been worked hard all its life. If this bushing lets go, what kind of damage can it do to the insides?

on mine, i caught it early, so i just had a repair done. no major parts were damaged. i had them do the chain and oil pump. got a six month warranty for around 400.00. probably a little high, but guy has good reputation. would have done it myself, but didn't have the time.
i would let the fluid out and check the condition of it. i had peices of junk in the fluid.
