my timing gear craped out at 212,000 miles, before it did the engine still ran great, and it still turns over. i would like to fix it, but would like to know if there are any special tools i will need? if there are a bunch of tools i need i will probibly just scrap it, but im hoping i can get it going again.
if you don't have a puller I have removed them by heating just the aluminum part of the old gear. buy the steel gears and warm them in the oven a bit before you install them will help to get them on easier, but you need to take it right from the oven to the motor, put it on then put a block of wood over end and tap (TAP) it as far as it will go before it cools then finish pressing it on like a power steering pulley.
datchew, probably not. The plastic gears just aren't as durable as the steel. They have been known to break, but this isn't an everyday occurance (just watch, yours & mine will both break tomorrow). If you are really pulling loads or hot-rodding your truck on a regular basis then it couldn't hurt. However, if you're ever doing work on the block anyway it couldn't hurt to replace them with a steel set. Supposedly the plastic gears run much smoother & quieter & don't bother the knock sensor on the EFI engines. Guys have run steel gears on EFI engines with no apparent problems though. Still prefer timing gears over a chain.
