Ok, I gotta do something with the 302 in my truck - frig all for oil pressure when she's hot , it's a stock 1988 F150 - 5.0/C6 with SEFI. I'm going to do one of 2 things: Option "A" is to yank the engine on a weekend, swap in a freshly machined crank/new bearings and smack it back into the truck so I can drive it to work Monday morning. Option "B" is to try a do a cheapo rebuild on another 302 and do the same weekend swap deal. ...Just to set the record straight, THERE IS NO MONEY FOR A COMPLETE REBUILD.....LOL....So please don't suggest it. I'm a apprentice truck & transport mechanic so I'll be doing all the work at my shop.
Here's my question: I have 2 mustang HO roller cams kicking around, if I can come across a roller engine at my buddy's junkard I'd like to swap in a HO cam. How with the SEFI accept the cam swap? I believe it's a speed density system. The engine has 186,000KM on it....The previous owners were too cheap to perform oil changes I guess. It runs great and leaks/burns very little oil so I think the rings/heads are ok....I'd like to get 2-3 more years out of this truck but I'm going to drive it until it's beyond repair and then use it for parts on my next truck. .....What's the group concensus on the crank swap?...I figure if I can re-bearing a CAT 3406 then I can re-bearing a 302....LOL
well your rig is speed density so its not sefi that would be mustang talk hehe. do a compression test to at least see where your at on each cylinder. doing bearings isnt to bad but will require the motor out to make it easier. I wouldnt mess with the cam personally. you will need to take the crank in to a shop for inspection to you get the correct bearing size.
