Comcast (cable)

Can anyone recommend a high quality RG-6 cable for my cable tv and cable broadband setup? Is Belden any good? What about quad shield. Or is that over kill? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

cat 6 quad shielded is what is required for digital cable and satelite. Belden is a good brand, and if you have to put your own ends on, see if the cable guy who brings the cable to set it up will toss in and crimp with his digicom connectors. Or get the tool off of ebay for about the same price as the regular tool at Radio Shack. They are a compression fitting verses the typical homeowner crimp job.

Belden has always been one of the highest quality brands out there. A good crimper is very important. Use silicone dielectric grease on your connections before you put on the connector and crimp them. This will help protect the connections from corrosion. Many of your connections may be subject to high humidity or temperature fluctuations if they are made in basements, attics, or crawlspaces, etc. Always use dielectric grease on outdoor connections. I have seen the aluminum foil shield on the older RG-59 cable turn to powder from corrosion. I suppose the quad-shield cable could do the same thing over time.

At the the very least use the RG-6 dual shield. The quad is better, but not really needed. I know Comcast used the dual for many years and I think they still do. And as stated before have them put the connectors on.

Cobalt Cable seems overpriced to me. Try www.bluejeanscable.com, their Belden 1694A with Canare F-connectors should be overkill for almost anything. If you plan on making a whole bunch, you could buy some bulk 1694A or Canare L-5CFB (both RG-6) and Canare F connectors. The Canare tools to do the stripping and crimping are expensive but worth every penny if you plan on making lots of cables.
