This is not the usual problem of the light staying on. When the driver's door is opened, none of the lights come on. I first tried the WD-40 trick to no avail. From reading these posts, I believe the WD-40 trick only works if the lights are staying on. I wiggled the wires coming out of the door and into the body and sometimes that makes the light work while I am wiggling them. I can't figure out if that means it is a short in the wires or possibly the switch. Any help would be appreciated.
Check where the wires go into the switch. It sounds like they have worked/broke loose and are not making a solid connection. If that looks good, trace the wires back and see if they are chaffed, creased, broken, etc.
You'll have to remove the door panel, and I believe it is part of the latch assembly. I've never done this though, so hopefully some one else here can shed some more light on the subject. I would think you should be able to pull the panel, and trace the wires to the switch.

This is gonna sound kinda crazy but..... does your auto down window function work? If not I have the same exact problem. On a good note.... I have found the problem. If you open your fuse compartment inside the Expy, you will see a row of relays on the left side of the fuse panel. The second one down from the top controls the interior lighting and the auto down on the window. First try wiggling the relay with the door open. The lights should come back on. Mine does this all the time. I just wish I could find a permanent fix for this!
