i have a 1990 auto transmission ford ranger xlt pickup and i need to replace the sensors for my speedometer and my gas gauge. i know thats the case with my speedometer anyways because i recently had the cable replace and i think thats what needs to be done to the one for the gas gauge as well because if it sits for a while on off, it will read 1/4 of a tank but when the key goes in, it stays on E. as long as this is the problem i was just wondering if someone could tell me how much the parts for this are and about how much work im looking at with this thanks.
A 1990 speedometer is mechanical, the cable is driven by a gear on the tranny.
The fuel sendor is in the tank, if you disconnect the wire the gauge should read full, this will indicate the gauge is working. You may find the float is damaged and is full of gas and thats the problem once you get at the sendor/float. Pull the bed back, it's much easier than dropping the tank.
well i bought the truck off of a friend and he said that before he had the transmission replcaed that the speedometer worked so i dont know if this helps any but....... by the way he didnt do it he had a shop do it so you would hope they knew how to do it.
The cable runs down through the firewall to the tranny, there's a single bolt holding it in the tranny, make sure it's connected to the tranny and if it is, disconnect it and remove the gear and makes sure all the teeth are there.
ok ill try this tommorow when i have some light cause its dark now and assuming if its connected and the teeth are alright its the cable correct? but if it is the cable though it doesnt make alot of sense since it was replcaed but then again you never now but thanks for your help.
one thing i wanted to ask is i noticed when i was looking at speedo cables they apparently have one for trucks with cruise controls and one for ones without it and i was wondering what would happen if the wrong one went on it like say a truck w/o cruise got one designed for one with cruise put on it.
