Hello, I got a 850 holley chokeless carb. I was wondering if there is any way to get the cfm's up to a 1000 or 1050? If anyone has done this, would I be better off to get a different carb or rebuild?
First, why? You would have to have a mightly wild 460 or bigger to come even close to needing anywhere in the neighborhood of 1000cfm. You'd likely have to be making around 750hp or more to need it. My boss ran in King of The Street (succesfuly with a mid 8 second Cuda) and only ran about an 1100 cfm dominator.
Ok, so to answer your question, buy a different carb. Get a Holley dominator. I believe they come in sizes from 750 to around 1300 cfm. Stay away from Demon carbs as the car i mentioned above actually slowed down 1 - 2 tenths with a demon.
I'd doubt that you will gain that much. You are limited by the venturi size and the size of the throttle plates in the base plates. You might be able to bore out the upper veturies a little bit, but you must do them the same or it will be unbalanced.
Thanks for the info, my motor is a 501. The compression is a tick above 12 to 1. I am running a pretty healthy cam. Sled pulling is the name of the game.
Something like that you may be better off with a dual 750 setup, if that's legal in your class. Not really any worrying about driveability suffering, I don't think your sled truck is your daily driver!
They also make a 1000 CFM 4150. From all tests I've seen, the 1000 idles better, transitions better, and makes more power than a 950. It seems as though holley did better homework with the 1000, and eliminated all the "Big Carb" problems that plagued the 950. It's only a few dollars more, why save $20 to get a much more inferior product?
