1993 F-150 4.9 six, 5 speed manual
I set base timing with spout disconnected at 12 degrees BTDC.
With spout reconnected, checked advance by reving motor & watched timing jump to approx 20 degrees ATDC for a second and then go back to 15 BTDC.
Looks like advance is not working, I am hoping it is not the Computer.
If you have a computer problem, your check engine light would be on or it would be generating some codes.
If its running good, I wouldn't worry about it. But for discussion, I didn't think our ignitions actually advanced (not saying you stated it like that either). There's no vacuum lines or mechanical devices that advance the ignition like it used in years past. Its a computer thing, that involves alot more than RPMS alone. Anyone have a better understanding?
i have a similar problem. noones replyed though. i set my timming to 12 DBTDC plug my spout in and its still at 12 DBTDC. engine light comes on evey so often not every time truck is driven. code is 213. not detecting spout. i put a computer in, modual, tune up, checked wiring, you name it. i also have acess to alldata for the diagrams. still the same problem. so i just set the base at 22DBTDC for now, runs great no spark knock.??????? im goint to pay close atention to this tread. thank you and good luck
Are you sure the rubber that holds the balancer together isn't flexing on acceleration? 20 degrees is a long way for it to flex, but might be possible.
I tried some different timing settings on the dyno last weekend. At 14 degrees power was good, but at 18 it was killing it on the top end by about 15 hp.
it worked for me. mileage is ok.195-230 miles per tank. of course depending on how much my foot is into it.
boought the truck with problem. how much mileage are these engines suposed to get.
3:08 gear(s) mazda 5 speed. 4x4, K&N,
i think it is a 15 gal tank. its in the rear.
