1967. '66 California, PCV system, and progressively tighter as the years rolled by.
Catalytic converters around '75 (cars, probably F100s), EGR about the same time, Air-injection pumps somewhere in there, computer-controlled carburetors early '80's, EFI for all by '88.
Learn EFI and EEC-IV systems as well as emissions systems--they are not all that difficult, there are "High-performance" catalytic converters out there everywhere, and, well, emission control enforcement is here to stay and spreading like the malignant cancer it is!
I used to have a "bury-my-head-in-the-sand, don't-fool-with-it, can't-do-anything-with-it" attitude, got p.o.-ed, and right now I'm doing all kinds of go-fast things that pass emissions--yeah, it costs more, and you have to be smarter than "they" are;what else is new?
The government required all cars and trucks to have total emmisions packages by 1983 (cat, pvc, egr, all the stuff). By 1st quarter 1984 anything made had them. So '83 would be the last unrequired year, if that helps.
Yeah, it all depends on the size of the truck too. The F100s and F150s started with the air pumps (worst piece of garbage I've ever seen!!) and EGR in early '80s, but the big boys (F250 and Up) didn't need the pump until the mid '80s.
That's what I'm trying to avoid. I don't want to have to deal with crappy emissions hardware. I only have about $1000 to spend, so I want to get a truck that will be easy to work on.
How annoying is all this smog-control stuff? I don't mind cats, but what about the airpumps, valves, vacuum tubes? Anything to worry about when hunting for an late 70's early 80's ford pickup with 302 or 351?
yes and make sure to take off the egr valve under the carb make sure to plug the exhaust gas port with some sort of plug and get a decent carb if you have duraspark no need to worry about that if it has eec-iv swap in a duraspark unit, then drive it like you stole it
