I currently have a 2001 4x4 with the "Off Road" suspension. I would like to lower it 4-6 inches. Can this be done safely and keep all the components aligned properly? Joint problems are making it difficult to get in & out of the truck, but I don't want to sell the truck because 1) I own it...not the bank and 2) I like it.

Do you use the 4X4? Can you make do with shorter street type tires or do you need the bigger tires?
I think you're going to have a hard time lowering it as much as you want to. A couple inches would be pretty easy but more than that I'm not sure. Hopefully someone will come along with a better answer for you.
Racerguy,
4x4 is nearly a requirement in Minnesota. I've had 2wd in the past and would prefer that, but the snow, ice, and general nastiness of winters here take that option off the plate. I plan on installing street oriented truck tires when the current ones wear out. I like having a little sidewall on the tire because I actually use the truck (lumber, dirt, etc).
I think preppypyro is onto the right solution...who would have thought?
I saw a spot on one of the TV truck shows where they installed a hidden step. This thing has electrical motors that swing it out when a door is opened. I need to dig around and see who the manufacturer is.
