oldhalftons, out of ciriosity, where are you getting your info? I'm not trying to trying to start an arguement here, but ford used the 240 in cars after '65. I've encountered a couple in older wreaking yards. Now, mind you, not many! I've seen more in trucks & vans.

Just curious how do you know what your looking at? Most say there are no visible differences between the two.

As far as your questioning oldhalfton's info source. Like you I didnt want to cause any arguement or seem to smartaleky (new word). I notice he stated 240s were put in Galaxies and then later stated that Ford "never" put 240s in cars. A bit contradictory I think. I wonder if my single pulley 300 really came out of a 75-82 freaking "woodchipper"!

Actually it came factory in a 65 Galaxie 500XL

Believe It Or Not

Keeping in mind I'm basically a new guy to the forum, don't take this as a dig... but I think you are incorrect.

Since Galaxies were being talked about and I thought this statment was incorrect, I decided to go to an authority on the subject. I went to www.galaxieclub.com and looked at two pages.

http://www.galaxieclub.com/1967Specs.html
http://www.galaxieclub.com/1968Specs.html

Each of these two years the Galaxie was available with the 240 I6 per the Galaxie Club of America.

As I stated earlier, my parents did have a 1966 Custom 500 with the 240. It came out from the Ford factory with the 240 and the title definitely had the year as 1966. Therefore, the 240 was in cars for more than just 1965.

GregTruck,
As for how to tell the difference, yes, there are few external differences.
- USUALLY (notice the emphasis!), in vehicles (cars & trucks), a 240 has a 2-grove ballancer & the 300 has a 3-grove ballancer.
- All for the 240 blocks that I've seen (so far) have a casting number to the tune of CXAE-XXXX-X (I suppose there are a few that start with D from the '70s?), Regardless of use (car or truck). All 300 blocks I've seen go to the tune of CXTE-XXXX-X, obviously blocks for the '70s have a D & well, you get the idea. Also, I have a block (from a '78 bronco) that is missing the T from the casting number. I've seen casting numbers like this in other trucks as well. It confuses me as to why ford would make different casting for 2 blocks, that for all intensive purposes are identical?

However, having said all of that, by far the best way is to measure the stroke. Many industrial 300s (I have pictures of the aircraft tug 300 that we used till just recently) have 2-grove ballancers. Its possible (?) that some of these industrial motors have odd casting numbers & ballancers as well. Ford was still producing the 300 for industial applications till just recently. To my knowledge an industrial 300 (240?, don't know if they were used in industrial applications) can be easily swapped into a vehicle, so its possible to have an industial motor in a truck.
Hope I'm not confusing anyone or sounding like the "know it all" (as I deffinately don't know it all)!
Edwin

I have to concur. I had a friend years ago that had a 66 galaxy.
It had a 240 six...No doubt...I used to drive it quite a bit...
As far as the 240 vs 300....I have one of each in trucks...
The 240 does have a smoother "car six" type of feel. But I
wouldn't exactly call it gutless... The 300 doesn't rev quite
as high, but does have a bit more torque in the low rpm's...
If I wanted to rip a tree outa the ground, I'll be using the 300...
But I think I prefer the 240 on the highway...It seems a bit
smoother...maybe cuz the shorter stroke...
And yes, mine both follow the usual norm as far as pully count..
My 240 has two . My 300, three. BTW, the 240's ended in trucks
in 74. My 74 F-100 with the 240 is one of the last 240's made..
75 and after, was all 300's until they dropped the 300's due
to emission problems, or whatever..MK
