Question 240 vs. 300

I guess I should have asked this ? in this forum. What is the difference between the 240 and the 300. I thought I had a 300 but it is actually a 240. I understand that many parts are interchangable ie. headers, intakes(CLIFFORD). What about some of the other parts ie. fuel pump, plugs... Where might I find this information? I have a 1966 F100

The two are pretty much the same. The only difference is the stroke, the 300 has a 4 inch bore and a 3.98 stroke. The 240 has the same block but a different crank and rods, giving it a stroke of like 3.18 IIRC. If you took the crank and rods out of a 300 and put them in a 240 you would have a 300. The heads on the 240's also have a little smaller combustion chambers, some people but 240 heads on 300's to get higher compression. Other parts, motor mounts, fuel pump, plugs, dizzy etc are the same.

The 240 was only in cars for 1 (one ) year, 1965 galaxies
The 240 lasted until 1974 and was VERY rare after 1972 in trucks but was in alot of vans till 74.

Hmmmm. Oldhalftons seems rather certain in his statement that 240 was in cars only one year, though I have heard otherwise often. I don't have any proof though, so he may very well be correct, though I'd like to know his source(s) as well.

The 240 is a much better car engine than truck engine, so for what in gods name would Ford put the 300 in cars but not the 240? 240's only failing in a car is that it weighs too much. It revs up to 4000 and up rather nicely, as opposed to the 300 that is more of a torquer of course.

The 240 was definitely in the 1966 Ford cars. My parents had a 1966 Custom 500 when I was a kid and it had a 240.

I did a little more sleuthing. According to what I can find out, the 240 (not the 300) was available in Galaxy and Custom cars till 1972, inclusive. Thanks ptmilan for the info as well.

Last Fall I was trying to figure out what my engine was. I ended up figuring on it being a 300 solely due to the fact that D5TE is stamped on the block. To my knowledge the D5 designation stands for '75 and the TE stands for truck engine. Evidently they were not producing 240's anymore in '75 so I thought I had a 300 in my 65 F100 that came with a 240.

Somewhere on a forum, maybe this one somebody posted that they always go by the harmonic damper/pulley. The person believed that if you had a single groove pulley then you had to have a 240 and all or most 300's had the 2 or 3 groove pulley. I don't know how true this is but my 75 engine has a single groove pulley so I don't know what to say about that. It would seem that changes could have easily been made through the years as to what damper/pulley is mounted on a crank so I don't know how good of an identification method this is but still worth bringing up.

D5TE is a 75-82 300 block ford used that casting # on several different blocks in that time period with different clutch mounting and dipstick tube mounting.

240's had 2 groove balancers, 300's had 3 groove balancers.

single goove pulley is from a 300 implement motor, probably a woodchipper or a stationary piece of equipment. combines and forklifts had standard 3 groove pullies.

Ford says the 240 was only used 1 year in cars and only the galaxie line. everything else is rumor or legend. no one has ever produced a later car VIN plate or dataplate or even a good picture of one, that wasn't actually a 170, 200, 250 small block six.

Oldhalftons is one of the most knowledgeable people on FTE in general, and ESPECIALLY when it comes to inine 6s

he is also a personal friend of mine, and not the type to log onto FTE to waste his time posting false information

Basically, if hes typing it, you can pretty much take it to the bank.

Carry on with your conversation men, im just bored cruising through the forums and saw this thread

Not to suggest that Oldhalftons or Icicle are not experienced, but I was a little curious just how correct Oldhalftons assertion about the 240 being available in 1965 only in cars.

Parts books at all the major chains show parts for the 240 till 1972 in Custom and Galaxys.

Several members over at fordsix personally have owned or known 1966 and 1968 cars with 240.

The Galaxy Club of America shows the 240 being available till 1968 at least.

There is currently a Ford brochure on Ebay, original Ford product from 1970, that mentions the 240 as an option. I could buy it for $4.99 plus shipping and send it to you guys if that would make you happy.

Doubtless, the 240 was rare, as everyone moved to V8 in the late 60's and early 70s. And since those few I6 cares were not top of the line, I am sure than even fewer them have suvived.

But the assertion that Ford never put 240s in cars after 65 is incorrect I believe.
