Several Weird Problems--Long Post
I am not sure if they are related or not as I bought it used. I've searched the forums, but only found help for the light behind the headlight switch. I have a 96 Explorer 4x4 XLT 6 cyl 4.0L. Ok here are the problems (some are a little hard to explain):- The driver's door handle is loose. (I know this is not the forum for this, but I think it relates to the a few of the other problems.)
- I can still work the power window after the key has been taken out, and the door has been opened from the inside. If any other door is opened, like the passenger side, it doesn't happen.
- The dome light does not come on if the door is opened from the outside, but it does if opened from the inside.
- The headlight warning chime does not work, nor does the light behind it. All of the other panel lights work. (I think I found a fix for the light behind it, but I wanted to include it on the list.)
- Sometimes the radio LCD goes off, but I can still work the radio. I can't work the CD player/changer unless it goes out while the CD player is on.
- The ignition switch seems loose, like it is not attached fully to the steering column. (Kind of looks like an aftermaket switch.) Sometimes it gets stuck, and I have to jiggle the key to get it to turn.
- Sometimes the temperature gauge does not work correctly. I know this because it is already registering a temperature in the morning before the key is even in the ignition after it has been off all night.
2,4 & 5 have the GEM as the common denominator. You'd have to verify the actual faults before buying a GEM because they're not cheap.
6...Before it fails completely, open up the column for inspection. If you find that only the lock cylinder is worn or just a plain sloppy fit, get a new one from Ford.
7....Locate the single wire temperature sender, (the 2 wire one is the sensor for the computer),turn the key to the "run" position, take the lead off the sender & ground it to the block, head or any good spot on the engine. The guage in the dash should spike all the way to one side. If it does, then the sender should be the fault.
Do you have a service manual like a Haynes? They're cheap & worth the $15.
1 & 3 is not too much trouble.
2,4 & 5 must be confirmed.
6 will catch you off guard if you don't look after it.
7 can go either way but I'd blame the sender first.
Good luck.
AL.
