My great luck continues..05 250 4x4 comes in last night. Ordered Nov 30, second truck, long story. Fleet calls me this am and says bad news, bad vibration at 45mph...all four 18" Continental AT OWL have flat spots. No other 18s on the lot to swap. Says he will get 4 new Conti's from the Ford Warehouse tomorrow (INSERT LAUGH HERE ) Never had a problem with Conti's, Great Tires he says. Can all four factory fresh tires have flat spots? I haven't driven the truck yet. But sure as heck will before $$ is exchanged.
FTE help me out here. Give me some truth and ammunition for tomorrow when they call me and tell me the tire fairy didn't make it by tonight. Are these guys right..is this smoke and mirrors ? If push comes to shove, what tires should I demand that would be a $ option exchange? Is it possible there is another problem, maybe drive train??
Dealer replaced all 4 factory continentals on my 04 expedition at ~ 4000 miles (from original delivery they had a vibration at about 60 to 70 mph). But he went thru a couple of attempts at rebalancing, rotation, suspension checks, etc., then he would say to me "give it a try for a few miles, see if that fixed it". About the 3rd time I brought it in with the same vibration problem, he said the Copntinentals on my Expy were a bad batch from the factory. So he ordered a new set from local Continental tire store and this set has been smooth ever since. I haven't heard too may folks brag about their Continentals.
I'm impressed that the dealer noticed it before you did. Most dealers I know could care less and only attempt a repair if the customer said anything.
Good luck with your new truck.
Kudos to the dealer for catching the problem before it became your problem. I've had bad Conti's, bad Goodyears, and now have Michelins. Of course MY dealer didn't catch it, so it's my problem. I'd pay the difference and get Michelin LTX M/S. Nice tread, not too aggressive but it has enough bite. Smooth ride, I only can't attest to longevity. Nice tires though. Good luck and don't take that truck unless it gets fixed to YOUR satisfaction. Just my .02.
Another thought if you're planning to change to a different brand. I have had great luck with the Goodyear 17" tires that came on my 97 F-150 and 01 F-150 S'crew (17" Goodyear tires were part of the Off Road Package back then). On the 97 I got 54,000 miles and on the 01 I got 48,000 (would have gone another 2 or 3 thousand, but I just felt like new tires). And if you check the road wear ratings, east Tenn. (where I live) have some of the hardest roads on tires. I keep 38 psi in them, and I rotated them every 3,000 to 4,000 miles for first 20,000 miles, after that about every 8 to 10,000. I had a tire dealer tell me a long time ago that rotations the first 20,000 miles meant more than later, but I had never practiced it. Also just because you put 38 psi in them when you put 'em on don't mean it will always be 38 psi, check it at least every oil change (everybody changes oil every 3,000 don't they?) or more often. I ordered my 05 F-150 S'cab Flareside with the optional Goodyear 18" tires, I sure hope they wear as well as my old Goodyears.
Jawbreaker-
have you actually seen this new truck? Or did the dealer call you and tell you right off there was a problem, BEFORE you went to look at it?
I went by last night, and it was on the rack with the tires off. Its the truck I ordered and it still hadn't been preped yet. So today when I call to tell them I am on my way, they tell me only one tire came in, the other 3 due in tonight. So................. tomorrow the tires go on and we will both test drive it. The fleet guy isn't sure as of tonight which tires they are... most likely Conti's. Come tomorrow, if not right, I may have to call the president of Autoway on Easter Weekend on his personal cell which he gave me after the loaner car debacle and told me to call him if things aren't going well.
As they drive the other 3 tires from Ocala to St Petersburg, they will pass 10 Tire Kingdoms. I quess its a warranty issue. The new tires come from the Ford Tire Warehouse in Florida. I will post the outcome tomorrow, and you know I will get on I-275 and get up 75 mph before I write the check!!
Okay, sounds legit. I was thinking there may have been a more serious issue, and they were using the "tires-are-no-good, we're-taking-care-of-ya" excuse to mask it.
good luck man. hope it all works out. conti tires are garbage no matter what car they are on. we have problems on the vw's with them also 20k and worn out cupping and just plan poor. tire. the sd with 17's in at are bfg rugged trail. glad i stayed that way
I have had two sets of Continental passenger tires on cars and have never had a problem, well except for a nail one time.I have them rotated every oil change (3000-4000 mi).I also have a local specialty heavy duty shop do the alignments, which Ford dealership recommends over their own alignment service?Anyway, that is my experience with Continental's.My wife has a new set on her Taurus right now and I am expecting/hoping for 40-50K miles out of them.Good Luck and Have Fun!
