I own a AK from Egypt and a Chinesse SKS. I payed 175 bucks for the SKS and 300 for the AK at the local pawn broker. They are really reliable guns and they are a blast to shoot. There are alot of acessories for them and ammo is dirt cheap. I had problems with my SKS jamming some times. I recommend the AK over the SKS anyday.
Couple of pounds of C-4 or Semtex would also be an option. Just joking. What about a Styer Aug or a Spas 12 shotgun. A 410 shot gun would be a possibility.
All of these fine instruments are next to impossible to own or buy here in California. Oh well.

I have a pair of SKSs and an AK, though I must admit to not shooting either very much, and I'd like to add my 2 cents. The SKSs are reliable as long as you leave them as originally configured regarding the magazine. I've never seen a reliable detatchable mag on a SKS. The AK was designed to operate with a detachable mag and does so reliably. Extra mags are dirt cheap and plentiful. There is a reason why the AK is used around the world by both the good guys and some the world could do without. I'd spend the extra money and buy the AK, if I were in your position. Personally I'd prefer my M1A or AR 10, but you can buy a pickup load of AKs for what one of those cost.
I would go with a Marlin leaver action in .44 mag. 10 + rounds depending on the barrel length.
Yeah Buddy!!!!
Love that 1894S!
As for the SKS vs. AK issue -
I'd go with the SKS. The reasoning is that the SKS is/was built as a 'Frontier' rifle. The AK as an (I can't bring myself to write that "A" word) weapon/combat weapon.
I have several friends that were overseas during the first Gulf War. One thing that the AK has all over anything else. . . IF you get it dirty, just pick it up, shake it out, then go on shooting. Even if it's been in the sand for several days.
Down-side - accuracy.
One guy says that IF you get one (AK) that shoots a group at 100 yds and 5 shots can be covered by the palm of your hand, keep it.
I bought one of each a bunch of years ago. Russian SKS, Chinese MAK 90.
('Sporterized' version of the AK with thumbhole stock.)
A retired police officer friend HAD to have my MAK 90. I didn't even shoot it.
I paid $159.00 apiece for them. He offered me $450.00 for the MAK 90.
I told him what I paid for it. He HAD to have it. MAK 90 is gone!! I tossed in 3 mags that I had bought and 1000 rounds of ammo.
